People of Indy

People of Indy We showcase Indianapolis through the people that live, work, learn and play here. Their images and stories caught in a moment in time will captivate you!

Indianapolis is called the Crossroads of America. The people that make up the Circle City are a diverse bunch, and this page will showcase them. Great images paired with a sharp bio or tidbit about them — just a glimpse into their life. And we'll ask everone: One thing they really like about Indy.

Ted Cecil turned 100 years old on March 23, 2022. “I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed with this,” Cecil said. “It is amazing, I say ‘Why me? Why me?’ And I love it, but it makes me feel humble, that I can have all those praises and gratitude.”
WWII pilot for the Royal Air Force, engineer, U.S. citizenship in 1964, team member of Apollo space mission engineers, sailor, dad, world-traveler, father, husband of 23 years to his lovely wife Mary Jane, baptized a Methodist at 4 days old, birthday boy for surprise party last Sunday at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church.

PHOTOGRAPHER'S NOTE: This gentleman doesn't use ANY mobility aids. No wheelchair, nor walker, nor even a cane. He said one of his secrets to life is always looking to the future. With so many Americans so burdened with health issues, Ted is a true inspiration to me. (1st photo: photographer unknown - Ted in his younger years!)

These gentlemen - Fr. Glenn O’Connor, and Rev. Yung Sheng Chen - are both passed now. They were chaplains at the airport and the Haflich Meditation Room and Interfaith Chapel has artwork that bears their names. A quiet space for travelers honoring two men who’s lives were anything but quiet. Fr. O’Connor served at many parishes in Indiana and was known as the Priest in the Pits for his service at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway; Rev. Chen was a survivor of the
2-28 incident in 1947, in Taiwan. (Google that if you are not familiar.)

PHOTOGRAPHER’S NOTE: I took the photos of the medication room, but not of Fr. O’Connor & Rev. Chen. Rev. Chen’s daughter provided it. Seems to me they both earned their names in the side of a mountain, not just this quiet room for travelers. They touched so many lives. “They we’re both such wonderful servants of God,” she said. Visit this room, in the Ticketing Hallway, the next time you’re at Indianapolis International Airport.

UPDATE: 3.30.20 Roscoe decided to close his 3 Indianapolis area restaurants rather than risk exposing customers and employees to the corona virus.

Like many restaurants today, Roscoe's Tacos reverted to take-out only with Covid19 restrictions. Stopped by for a Paul Bunyon taco to-go and bumped into Roscoe himself!

He's worried. Told me years ago he could project sales with accuracy and even before the Corona virus, business Mon - Thurs had been slow. He never can predict lately how much any month will bring in. He's heading into his 25th anniversary in April and hopes he makes it. He has a new menu to roll out!

PHOTOGRAPHER'S NOTE: Anyone running their own business gets my respect. Roscoe told me he started the business when his wife lost her job. We exchanged phone numbers after I suggested that students at IU School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI looking for a project perhaps could help him out with marketing and design. I'll make a connection for him. We need to see a 26th anniversary! (And he qualifies for People of Indy as one of this 3 locations is in Indianapolis!)

Miss Betty turned 94 this past Sunday. When she walked into church, her friends surprised her by singing "Happy Birthday!" She has been attending, and volunteering at, this church for years. She comes in every Monday to tabulate the attendance.

PHOTOGRAPHER'S NOTE: MISS Betty was quite fashion forward this morning! I was told that is always the case.

They say the secret to success is to find a need and fill it. That is precisely what Angela, (pictured here on the right, with her daughter Alicia on the left) has done when she launched ChowPantry Inc. nine years ago. She distributes cat and dog food at the food pantry of area churches. Often, the food pantry patrons go to her truck first, before heading inside the church for their own food.

"Animals can be their life line," says Angela. "They are down and out but still want to take care of their pets. The goal is to keep the pets out of a shelter." | Want to donate? https://www.chowpantry.org/donations-and-sponsors.php

PHOTOGRAPHER'S NOTE: At first blush, I wondered why people who had to access a food pantry to eat would even own an animal. That's a cost. But Angela softened me a bit to this idea, and I understand how an animal can help to combat loneliness. I was impressed by Angela's commitment to the cause.

Heather is a great server. She strikes the perfect balance between stopping by a table too much and not enough.

PHOTOGRAPHER'S NOTE: I asked if I could take a picture of her shirt, because that's pretty much my daughter's philosophy. She told me I could buy her one at Five Below.

This so Cooper. Holding a magazine with his image on the front cover. (He's the bigger kid; both had cancer.) Roselynn passed away not too long after this photo was taken. On this day, Cooper was doing much better. Not 100% out of the woods yet, but almost there.

PHOTOGRAPHER'S NOTE: I asked if it bothered him seeing this magazine cover. He said "No", and was happy to pose with it.

"Mr. Riley and Booth Tarkington were drinking buddies. They'd hang out at the Murat together."

This is Joe, the Hancock County Historian. He has come to Indy for the past few years to participate in a wreath laying ceremony for James Whitcomb Riley. Today is Mr. Riley's 168th birthday, and that's Mr. Riley on Joe's swanky tie.

PHOTOGRAPHER'S NOTE: In retrospect, I should have positioned Joe so Mr. Riley's grave was in the background. But a schoolbus was driving up the hill and I didn't want that in the shot! Joe knew quite a few tidbits about the Hoosier Poet.

"Can I take your picture?" Robert asked.

He is from Wisconsin, works in construction and this was his first trip to Indy. He enjoyed what he was seeing so far, and really liked the Canal Walk. He was taking pictures of the people who took pictures of him in front of places that were quintessential Indy.

PHOTOGRAPHER'S NOTE: Robert had startled me at first and I was a bit suspect. But as soon as we started chatting, it was apparent what a friendly guy he was.

"I do like Indianapolis," said Nathan Foxton Artist. "I am originally from Rochester, New York but now have a studio in Harrison Center for the Arts."

PHOTOGRAPHER'S NOTE: With all of the recent news about Civil War statues, when I first saw Nathan painting I was wondering if there was a connection there. Hate that this was my first thought! My second thought: Wish there were more artists who ventured out of their studio like this.

"She's terminal. But until then, we are making sure we have as many experiences as we can with her." 22 month old Vivian and her parents Arthur and Rachel were in attendance a the 2017 Miracle Ride, a fundraiser for Riley Hospital.

PHOTOGRAPHER'S NOTE: I noticed Vivian's ears were pierced; It was done by one of the ENT physicians at Riley during surgery. Rachel & Arthur are living life to the fullest with Vivian. This little girl is so loved.

NAMELESS NOTABLES: She was a guest at Promingdale's, a shopping event for the Riley Cancer Center Family Prom. Trying very hard to put on her own shoes :)

PHOTOGRAPHER'S NOTE: I loved watching this little girl and her family get ready for the big event. The Riley Cancer Center Family Prom is one very bright spot for these families in their rough road to being cancer free.
