This little baby Wren comes with a story time.
Awhile back, Mom & Dad built a nest on our porch (up on a ledge), a few weeks ago we started to hear chirping, and the parents were delivering grubs probably 200 times a day. Very hard-working parents. Last night, while watching a movie, the chirping sounded louder than normal. We realized that the two baby birds were following Dad out onto the ledge. We watched them for quite a while, learning to be on the ledge but too scared to do anything else.
Fast forward to this morning, I was out photographing hummingbirds in the backyard when I saw one of the babies in a bush, I realized they both had fledged (or fell? because they clearly didn't know what they were doing) Next thing I knew this baby was stuck in the pool, seconds away from drowning. I fished him out of the pool and brought him back up to the nest. He ended up back on the ground and was clearly in shock. He let me take care of him for almost 30 minutes, staying right here (photographed below) afraid to even move. Dad was searching endlessly for him, and he refused to chirp or even more. Finally, he started chirping - Dad found him under our outdoor couch, and I've seen them flying around the backyard all day.
He probably has already forgotten his near-death experience - just a few minutes after leaving the nest - but I won't.
