Happy Valentine’s Day, friends!
Self care is very important to me, and caring for my plants is something that brings me peace and happiness. So this Valentine’s Day I want to share with you a few of my favorite plants with heart shaped leaves!
My first love the Variegated String of Hearts.
This is the very first plant I picked up when the world shut down. It was the very first plant that I said, “okay, I can do this.” I did a lot of research. Called around and visited a TON of stores. I bought some online, killed most of them because I repotted them almost immediately… oops! But, I’ve learned. I learned the VSoH is actually a succulent.
Scientific name: Variegated Ceropegia Woodii.
Light: Bright, indirect light, like an east-facing window.
Water: Because the VSoH stores water in its leaves, the taco test is a great way to know when the plant needs water. I’ve read a lot of different things that all suggest watering at various times, but tried and true… fold the leaves. When they bend easily, into a taco shape, it’s time to water.
Heart Fern
Scientific name: Hemionitis Arifolia
This is a new plant for me so I can’t speak to it’s care from experience but what I’ve read suggests the following.
Light: Bright, indirect light.
Temp: Warm temperatures with high humidity.
Water: Keep the heart fern moist but not wet.
I find this to be typical of most ferns, wanting to be moist but not wet. A few years ago the family and I took a trip down the Pacific Coast Highway. We stopped at a place called Fern Canyon. If was where they filmed some of Jurassic Park. Anyways, it’s wet. It’s wet and lush, and absolutely beautiful! You can find five-fingered ferns, dark green sword ferns, and delicate lady ferns. That is definitely where my love of ferns began.
Sweetheart Ivy
Scientific name: Deltoidea Sweetheart
This is a new plant for me so I can’t speak to it’s care from experience but what I’ve read suggests the following.
Light: Bright, indirect light. Place near a north or east-facing window. (Mine is in a northwest-facing window and it. is. THRIVING!)
Water: water when the soil is dry.
