Hunters be aware of offers of free this and that included in Deer Drone Recovery services

Going into the field, helping track, providing or using extraction equipment (sleds, carts, etc.), physically assisting with recovery, or offering ongoing help after the drone flight moves the activity much closer to “assistance in hunting.”

At that point the Guide License requirement is more clearly triggered if any compensation or reward is involved (including promotional free/zero-cost offers aimed to build future business).

The main DNR document on drones (Law Enforcement Handbook LEH 750 – Unmanned Aircraft System Use, and the related public summary) focuses only on distinguishing lawful recovery of a dead animal from illegal hunting with an aircraft.

Key recommended factors for lawful recovery include:

The UAS operator is a third party with no vested interest beyond assisting with locating the animal.

The operator locates the dead animal and then provides the animal’s location to the hunter.

The UAS operator does not accompany, communicate, or further aid in locating or retrieving the animal.

Providing extraction equipment (even just dropping off a sled or cart ) goes beyond “providing the location” and constitutes further aid in retrieving the animal. That moves the activity firmly into the category of assisting in hunting in the eyes of someone wearing a green jacket if he so chooses to say so.

So you can't be a guide and a drone recovery resource at the same time as guiding is hunting. As drone operators we cannot assist with the hunting aspect. Buyer beware. We will keep us both on the safe side of any scrutiny in assisting you to recover your game using drone technology.
