Because of the Coronavirus stay-at-home ordinance, I find myself with more free time than usual lately. So, I decided to make this short video to share with you four of the main insights I learned after photographing forty-four awesome individuals with Down syndrome, my daughter included.
Uniqueness:
It is human nature to put labels or to group people that to the naked eye may look similar to each other. But, Down syndrome doesn’t give anybody a preset personality. Individuals with Down syndrome are like snowflakes, each one is unique.
Attitude:
Despite physical and intellectual limitations, great attitude and enthusiasm levels are high within the Down syndrome population. If people's attitude is contagious, then we should surround ourselves with friends, classmates and coworkers with Down syndrome.
Empathy:
More often than not, people with Down syndrome display a genuine response to the feelings, the emotions, and the needs of others.
Authenticity:
What you see is what you get. No pretense.
March 21st was World Down Syndrome Day, so I also believe it is important for us as a society to acknowledge this wonderful group of people that are rarely part of the day-to-day activities of the general population.
Stay positive and be safe!
