March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day 💙💛 For our family, it’s a day that celebrates one very special little boy, our son Silas.
Silas happens to have Down syndrome, but more importantly he is curious, hilarious, stubborn, affectionate, and the absolute light of our lives. Having him in our lives has introduced us to a life and community filled with fierce love, advocacy, and joy and it’s also shown me how many misconceptions still exist about Down syndrome.
A few big ones:
1️⃣ Myth: People with Down syndrome can’t live independent or fulfilling lives.
Reality: Many individuals go to college, have careers, meaningful relationships, and live independently.
2️⃣ Myth: Down syndrome defines who someone is.
Reality: It’s just one part of a whole, complex, amazing human being.
3️⃣ Myth: Families raising children with Down syndrome are constantly struggling.
Reality: Our lives are full of laughter, milestones, community, and so much love.
If you’d like to learn more, support families, or get involved, two organizations close to our hearts are Gigi’s Playhouse and Jack’s Basket.
Today we celebrate inclusion, awareness, and the incredible individuals who make this community so special. And today (and every day) we celebrate Silas. 💛
