Howdy Y'all !! The midday Texas sun beat down heavily on the small rural community of Wallis, illuminating the pristine white exterior of the Church of the Guardian Angel. Decades earlier, Czech immigrant families had settled in Austin County, pouring their dreams and deep-rooted Catholic faith into a sanctuary closer to the railroad line. Though the devastating Galveston Hurricane of 1900 had leveled their original structure, the community refused to let their spirit be broken. Working shoulder-to-shoulder, they rose from the wreckage to rebuild, ultimately erecting a breathtaking Gothic Revival masterpiece by 1915 that stood as a proud testament to their endurance. Stepping through the front doors, the oppressive Texas humidity instantly dissolved into a reverent, cool stillness. Inside this legendary Texas Painted Church, the eyes were immediately drawn upward to an ornate interior filled with vibrant biblical figures meticulously painted across the ceiling. Handheld cameras struggled to fully capture the majestic, shifting light dancing through the historic stained glass windows, which cast brilliant hues of sapphire and ruby across the weathered wooden pews. Sheltered by its sacred walls, generations of families had found a profound connection between the invisible and the everyday, carrying forward a rich heritage that remained firmly anchored in the heart of Texas.

Howdy y'all! After a wonderful trip to Gonzales, Texas, we opted for the scenic route home and wound up on a quiet backroad passing through the small community of Wallis. We stopped to explore the Guardian Angel Catholic Church, and it is absolutely stunning. As one of the celebrated Painted Churches of Texas, it is well worth a detour if you love historic architecture and hidden gems.

Howdy Y'all !! The Basilica of Our Lady ofSan Juan traces it roots to a 1623 miraculous event that happen in San Juan de los Lagos, Mexico. An Image of the Virgin Mary is credited with reviving a fallen Child. The Shrine has gone thru a few change and in 1970 a Plane Crash Tragedy occur: On October 23, 1970, a single-engine plane piloted by Francis B. Alexander crashed into the roof of the shrine and exploded during a service. Miraculously, the statue of the Virgin and the Blessed Sacrament were rescued from the fire, and the pilot was the only fatality despite over 130–150 people being inside. This event is widely commemorated as a defining moment that deepened faith and pilgrimage in the Rio Grande Valley. I love the Basilica.
