“Forsake not the assembly with other believers” is NOT a mandate to go to a church building. It’s a mandate to stay surrounded by people who believe in the God you believe in ‼️
Too often, we reduce the idea of “church” to a physical building, a place where people gather on Sunday mornings for worship and then disperse to their separate lives. While this is a valid expression of the church, it does not encompass the full breadth of what it means to be in community with believers. The early “church” gathered in homes, in the streets, in the temples, and, most importantly, in each other’s lives. The essence of church wasn’t the physical space—it was the people, the community of believers united by their shared faith in Jesus.
This understanding opens up new possibilities for how we live out this command in our own lives. While gathering together in a physical church building is important to some, the true essence of this mandate extends far beyond Sunday mornings. It’s about cultivating an environment where we are constantly surrounded by people who believe in the same God, who can pray with us, hold us accountable, and spur us on in our faith.
Church isn’t simply a destination we visit once a week. It’s a community that we are an active part of, not just in a church building, but throughout the course of our daily lives. True fellowship means that we are constantly connected to believers in meaningful ways, building relationships, building connections that keep our faith alive and flourishing.
