Entering contests with wide ranging categories makes me shoot things I wouldn’t normally seek out. I spent several afternoons crawling around shooting bees, wasps, caterpillars, grasshoppers and beetles. I always dread doing it because I’d much rather be chasing mammals or birds, but then I end up having fun with it. It’s certainly a challenge and makes me grow a little bit every time.

This one won’t win any points in the contest, but it makes me laugh. Love how close I’ve been able to get to these cats. They’re so calm, cool and collected. They know something is there, but seem pretty certain that whatever it is they can kick its butt.

This one was inside the focal range of my 600mm at roughly 12-13’ so I grabbed the back-up camera with the 200 and got some full body shots.

Slowly working through the Wildlife In Focus contest photos. I have several hundred bobcat shots from eleven encounters. There are so many good ones I’m struggling with, but figured I’d share one of the culls.

Love taking their photos. Hate having to choose just three to submit.

With the Wildlife In Focus contest winding down it’s time to start the painful process of culling the photos that don’t make the cut. You only get to use three of each category. I have around 300 bobcat shots 😂

I can’t show y’all the contest entries until after judging and awards, but I’ll post some of the culls from time to time. Hope y’all enjoy them.

I’ve had more bobcats writhin 20 feet during this contest than all the others combined. I’ve had nine encounters including one with a mother and two mostly grown juveniles. Looking at the photos I know it’s been at least 5, maybe 6 different cats. It’s pretty amazing to sit quietly and have these ghosts appear for a quick drink. They’re typically only there for less than a minute. This one hung out for almost five minutes getting several drinks and walking around the pond in between.

I initially got into having a floating blind to shoot shorebirds and waterfowl up close and it works great for that. But the amount of mammals I get is a really nice added bonus.

Shooting for the Wildlife in Focus contest is always fun, but this opportunity put me on a whole different level. Happened ten minutes ago and I’m still shaking like a leaf in a hurricane.

This is just an iPhone shot of the lcd screen on the Nikon. The real photos are going to be insanely good. They stuck around for several minutes drinking side by side.

Number one moment ever in a photo blind.
