Backyard Fall Migration
It is not truly fall migration season in my backyard until the Baltimore orioles come through. They finally showed up today and have been hitting the suet. No luck with the orange slices yet.
Happy birding!

Birds of Australia
The laughing kookaburra is a large robust kingfisher with a whitish head and a brown eye stripe. The upperparts are mostly dark brown but there is a mottled light-blue patch on the wing coverts. The underparts are cream and the tail is barred with rufous and black. The territorial call is a distinctive laugh that is often delivered by several birds at the same time and is widely used as a stock sound effect in situations that involve a jungle setting.
This species is native to eastern mainland Australia, but has also been introduced to parts of New Zealand, Tasmania, and Western Australia. This particular bird was found in downtown Sydney on the edge of park land. It lives in dry eucalypt forest, woodland, city parks and gardens, occupying the same territory throughout the year. The species retains the same partner for life. A breeding pair can be accompanied by up to five fully grown non-breeding offspring from previous years that help the parents defend their territory and raise their young.
The laughing kookaburra typically waits perched on a branch until it sees an animal on the ground and then flies down and pounces on its prey. Its diet includes lizards, insects, worms, snakes, mice and it is known to take goldfish out of garden ponds.

Happy National Hummingbird Day!
National Hummingbird Day was established in 1996 by birding enthusiast Penny Elliston. We celebrate this day on the first Saturday of September, so this year it is September 7th.
The photo was from my April 2023 trip to Ramsey Canyon, which is in southeast, Arizona. This is a male Broad-billed Hummingbird, which I photographed from a blind at the Ramsey Canyon Inn. Go to https://fowlobsession.com to see more hummers from Ramsey Canyon and a few other locations.

Birds of Australia
The superb fairywren is common across south-eastern Australia. This photo is of a female. The male in breeding plumage has a striking bright blue forehead, ear coverts, mantle, and tail, with a black mask and black or dark blue throat.
The species can be found in almost any area that has at least a little dense undergrowth for shelter. This one was found bouncing through the underbrush at the base of the Blue Mountain Botanic Garden and required quite a bit of chasing until she posed for me. The species eats mostly insects and supplements its diet with seeds.
The superb fairywren was named 'Australian Bird of the Year' for 2021, after a survey conducted by Birdlife Australia.

Birds of Australia
I don’t typically post photos of ravens, but this was one of my favorite photos from the trip. It shows the intensity of a predator staring right through its prey, deciding whether or not to kill and eat me. The green moss in the foreground and the patchwork and colored background gives the photo some pop – all quite by chance btw.
The bird is a mature male australian raven, distinguished by the white iris and the impressive lance shaped throat feathers.

Birds of Australia
I had a few questions about the big yellow wing tag on the Sulphur Crested Cockatoo. It is part of a research project in the Sydney area allowing the public to easily report the location of specific birds. The program utilizes the below page.

Birds of Australia
The sulphur-crested cockatoo is far and away the most numerous of the parrots we observed throughout the eastern coast. These birds seem to be at ease in populated urban areas, with many tourists taking photos with their phones from 3 ft away.
The species is known for its intelligence, having figured out how to open garbage cans and dancing to music. Parrots in general will feed in large groups on the ground, making them susceptible to predators. Their defense has evolved to having one or two in a nearby tree standing guard, which has gotten into Australian slang. The lookout for police raids is known as a cockatoo or cocky for short. One of the photos in this series shows two little corella parrots in a tree. These two were the lookouts for a flock of nearly 100 birds feeding on the ground.
The hardest part of photographing this species was getting a shot with its crest standing up. As you see, these birds are closely watched in the Royal Botanic Garden. This guy is number 52.

Birds of Australia
This white-bellied sea Eagle was entertaining us from the deck of our Airbnb. He passes our house, circled around, dove toward the water and captured what looks like some sort of snake. He then did a fly by enabling me to capture this and many other shots. He was not very close, but the 500 mm zoom, 47 mp camera, and serious cropping resulted in a reasonably good photo.
These birds are huge, with a 3 ft long body and a 7 ft wingspan. They reside in coastal Australia, India, Sri Lanka and southeast Asia.
The white-bellied sea eagle is revered by indigenous people in many parts of Australia and is the subject of various folk tales throughout its range.

Birds of Australia
The Masked Lapwing is a very odd looking predominantly ground bird native to the northern and eastern parts of Australia, New Zealand and New Guinea. We saw them throughout our visit, mostly foraging in large grassy park areas. This bird was found in the Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney.
The species is best known for its yellow facial mask and has a yellow spur on the carpel joint of each wing that it uses to attack predators, especially when defending a nest site.
