Kim Hoholek Photography

Kim Hoholek Photography I've always enjoyed photography since I was little. My favorite books were of those with pretty pictures. National Geographic was my bible of study.

I would stare at them for long period of times while studying the composition and lighting of such.

Yesterday, I picked up my camera to begin documenting my fifth and final year of exhibiting Native American culture. This year’s theme aligns with America’s 250th anniversary, but with a focus on honoring those who were here long before the nation’s founding.

Along the Wisconsin–Illinois border lies a remarkable confluence where Turtle Creek meets the Rock River. This area was once home to the historic Ho‑Chunk settlement of Ke‑Chunk, or “Turtle Village,” a major community of nearly 700 residents situated at this very meeting of the waters.

Pictured below is the landscape across these two waterways where the village once stood.

Big shout out to Nature At The Confluence for your guidance on this!

Bow & Arrow of Hager City, WI.

Information from Wisconsin Historical Society stated the following on the marker near Bow & Arrow:

The rock outline you see on the distant bluff is an archeological curiosity. Jacob V. Brower, a Minnesota archeologist, observed this formation in 1902 and interpreted it as a bow and arrow. In 1903 he wrote, "Some of the stones representing the bowstring are displaced. The intention seems to have been to represent a bow and arrow drawn to shoot toward Lake Pepin." Modern archeologists think the boulders may form a bird effigy, but no one has reached a definite conclusion. Although it is an old, well-known landmark, perhaps even ancient, its origin and age are unknown and it is no part of the Indian lore of this region. Boulder alignments made by Indians exist in other states, but this is the only one known in Wisconsin. Was it made by Indians? Is it a bow and arrow or a bird? It remains a mystery.

Getting ready for the Artist Sneak Peek on May 7 at 6 p.m. at Hedberg Public Library. Come check out my work along with pieces from other local artists as we share a preview of our upcoming monthly art displays. I’ll also be announcing my theme for this year’s exhibit during the event, so you won’t want to miss it.

Pictured below is my good friend Sandra Haralson, who modeled for me a few years ago in representation of the MMIW movement. This photo will be featured throughout May in the library showcase.

May 5 is MMIWR Awareness Day, and wearing red helps bring visibility to missing and murdered Indigenous women and relatives. More information can be found in the link below.
