.Impacts is excited to launch a fundraising fine art print sale in support of Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (.e.s.c.u.e), Africa's first indigenous-owned elephant sanctuary, and I am honored to post these images from my friends and colleagues!

Funds raised will send 13 orphaned elephants back to the wild. This moment is such an immense achievement for the sanctuary and their brave young orphans – who arrived with considerable odds stacked against them, and so much to overcome.

I am honored to support this important moment and highlight the vital link between empowering women, environmental stewardship, and wildlife preservation.

Sharon Guynup and I are so proud to be the recipients of the Eliza Scidmore Award from the National Geographic Society!! Read about this in the December issue of National Geographic Magazine.

Washington, D.C., November 2, 2023 — Wildlife photographer Steve Winter and journalist Sharon Guynup traveled to 32 U.S. states on a two-year investigation documenting the dangers captive tigers face in the tourism industry. The resulting 30-page National Geographic magazine feature was shared with members of Congress and ultimately led to the passage of the Big Cat Public Safety Act in December, 2022. To recognize the impact of their work, National Geographic Explorers Winter and Guynup will receive the Society’s 2024 Eliza Scidmore Award for Outstanding Storytelling.

The award –– named for the writer and photographer Eliza Scidmore, the first woman elected to the Society’s Board of Trustees in 1892 –– recognizes individuals who use immersive storytelling to make complex ideas, issues and information relevant and accessible.

“Storytelling is fundamental to our mission work at the Society because it raises awareness of critical issues, provides context, sparks dialogue, fosters empathy and moves people to act,” said Jill Tiefenthaler, CEO of the National Geographic Society. “Sharon and Steve’s compelling, evidence-based storytelling did just that. In illuminating the plight of tigers, they touched the hearts and minds of countless people — including lawmakers. We are proud to recognize these storytellers with this prestigious award.”

We are very excited to announce that Sharon Guynup .guynup and I have won the National Geographic Society's 2024 Eliza Scidmore Award for Outstanding Storytelling! This award was for our investigative reporting on the plight of captive tigers in the U.S. Read more about their work at the link in bio.

"Documenting animal abuse, wildlife trafficking, and other criminality was heartbreaking. But the National Geographic Society gave a copy of our 30-page National Geographic story to every member of Congress—and in December 2022, the Big Cat Public Safety Act was signed into law. It was among the most meaningful moments of my career—a big step toward protecting big cats all over the world." - Steve Winter

It’s so appropriate that our epic, 3,000-plus-mile, cross-country journey should begin in in Liberty Canyon—the site of the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing. The shrill grind and clank of trucks moving earth is loud, crazy music: Construction of California’s first urban wildlife crossing—the world’s largest––is underway!
Five of us are driving from Los Angeles to the Florida Everglades to explore similar projects that are creating safe passage for animals. It’s the first at least six road trips for the “Wildlife Crossings Across America” project, the brainchild of Beth Pratt, who heads the National Wildlife Federation’s California operations. We’re also riding with Renee Callahan and Marta Brocki, experts from Animal Road Crossing, or ARC—a nonprofit that helps reconnect landscapes and wildlife habitat. Photographer Steve Winter and I will document and report along the way.
Beth Pratt had a dream: connecting some of the best cougar habitat in the region, which is bisected by the 101 Freeway. Her next initiative was announced at the memorial: the Wildlife Crossing Fund. Beth plans to raise half a billion dollars to build wildlife underpasses and overpasses nationwide. The goal: to protect both animals and people. Collisions kill one- to two-million large animals each year and cause some 200 human fatalities, at a cost of $10 BILLION.
The mercury hit 106 by the time we pulled off I-15. We parked in a barren clearing where Neal Darby waited for us. As part of his introduction, he told us that in his work as a biologist for the National Park Service, he’s spent decades studying this harsh, rocky landscape. It’s the site of a wildlife bridge that will break ground next spring, one of three needed in the area.

Announcing a roadtrip for the wildlife! I'll be on the road from September 15 to September 28, driving from Los Angeles to Florida, on stage one of our multi-year roadtrip. We'll be exploring wildlife crossings and connectivity projects and featuring local partners doing this important work.
Joining me is a dream team: Beth Pratt California Director of the National Wildlife Federation - Me - National Geographic Photographer Steve Winter, environmental journalist and author Sharon Guynup, and ARC Solutions - Animal Road Crossings team members Renee Callahan and Marta Brocki. You can follow our adventures here and on my page and also at http://savelacougars.org/crossingsroadtrip/
Why are we doing this? So we can raise awareness and support to build more crossings!

P-22’s legacy is to protect more wildlife and ecosystems. To connect those areas and build more crossings!!!
