Between running My Geek, Inc., my kids & summer vacation, starting back at school to work on a degree, and my grandpa passing away — I've spent a little too much time away from my camera, it felt good to get back behind the glass.

Today's subject was Lucah as he continues building confidence on his dirt bike. It's amazing how quickly kids grow, and being able to freeze these moments is one of the reasons I enjoy photography so much. He'll need an upgrade soon enough...

Lines of Motion

Portland moves a little differently here.

I spent some time at Tilikum Crossing — the “Bridge of the People” waiting this one out, watching the rhythm of the lines and the timing of the Portland Streetcar as it came off the bridge. This was one of those shots where you don’t force it… you just stay ready until everything lines up.

Technically, this one taught me something too. I stopped way down to f/32 to hold all the detail and compression, but it pushed me to ISO 1000—and you can see a bit of that noise when you look closely.

Next time, I’d probably back off to something like f/11 or f/16 and keep the ISO cleaner while still getting the depth and structure I’m after.

That’s part of the process though—every shot like this dials things in a little tighter for the next one.
