A Cape May Warbler in fall plumage 🍁🍂

Stopped in for a short walk around Lake Junaluska during a trip to the Smokies this past weekend and the birds were cooperating 📸

Fun fact: Cape May Warblers have tongues similar to hummingbirds that allow them to drink nectar and sip sap during the winter months

Here are my 5 favorite in-flight pictures from my trip to the James River. Which one is your favorite?

Did you know?:

Bald eagles were declared locally extinct along the James River in the mid 1970s due to DDT pesticide pollution causing weakened eggshells. Following the ban of DDT pesticide which resulted in cleaner water, the first nesting pair returned to the James River in the late 1970s.

Since then, the resident eagle population has grown to more than 380 pairs! The James River now hosts one of the densest bald eagle habitats in North America 🦅

Eye-level with a 21 year old bald eagle 🦅

This eagle, known by the locals as Bandit, was hatched at the Birmingham Zoo in April of 2005 and released along the James River in 2009

Originally thought to be a female due to its large stature, it earned the name Dolly (after Dolly Parton) in a nationwide naming contest

During recent mating observations, Bandit has been confirmed to be a male

Yesterday, he picked the perfect perch at eye-level, giving us the opportunity to snap this portrait 📸
