There are patriots among us.
Last week, after a long, hot march for voting rights, this man rested with his flag. In the crowd, Indivisible protestors chanted "we're taking our flag back!" Now.

Happy birthday America.
I know you're hurting. The cancer of institutionalized corruption gnaws at your very soul. Your leadership, sworn to protect and defend you, choose instead to protect and defend the people that desecrated your capitol, and traitors convicted of seditious conspiracy against you. We have fallen from grace on the world stage, breaking treaties with our closest allies, starting wars of choice, and committing crimes against humanity as defined by the Geneva Convention. I'm not sure it helps, but please know, some of us still love you, and will not abandon you in your time of need. We will continue to champion truth, justice and the American way of civil rights, Constitutional law, and the principles that all people are created equal and no one should be above the law, despite what the bought and paid for Supreme Court has ruled. We will never surrender, because we believe in you and what your Constitution stands for. May you have the strength to believe in yourself and fight the cancer from within, and once again become the nation, of the people, by the people and for the people.

The boys are back in town and strutting on the beach. Sanderlings scurrying along the cusps of red flag waves and dodging 4x4 jeeps clawing their way up the beach to VA.

On the Outer Banks, the Bodie Island Lighthouse continues to stand, resilient against the gale force winds of winter, and the thousands of summertime visitors marching on the grass and running down the board walks.

I love this lighthouse. It's been part of my life from my family's inaugural trip to the OBX in the mid-1960's. It's the first stop after a long drive that begins in at the foothills of the Appalachian mountains and ends with the cold waves of the northern Atlantic lapping at my toes. All while the steady brilliant beacon sweeps the shoreline, lighting the waves, piercing the clouds and guiding sailors home, again and again for generations.

Twenty minutes west of Kitty Hawk, NC, the Alligator River NWR is home to owls, bob cats, red wolves and bears. Lots of bears. Over 2 days and lots of driving the refuge roads, I photographed 22 black bears, including these 2: Top: young sow in season, (female) hiding from stalking boars and Bottom: an old boar (male) missing part of his right ear and possibly his left eye from many battles with other males in a battle for gene pool dominance. 5/30/26)

Whooping Crane
This morning I photographed 19 whooping cranes. In the 1940's only 19 cranes still existed. On the verge of extinction, they now number just under 600. Standing 5' tall this bird is magnificently regal.
