Whooping Crane
This morning I photographed 19 whooping cranes. In the 1940's only 19 cranes still existed. On the verge of extinction, they now number just under 600. Standing 5' tall this bird is magnificently regal.

Ibis are adapted for foraging with their long, down-curved bill and bright white plumage. Along a roadside near Belhaven, NC these white Ibis glean the remains of last summer's cornfield.

This eastern NC cornfield is a prime example for a successful public-private partnership where farmers are compensated for sustaining migrating birds through programs like the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act (NMBCA) and the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA). Through federal grants, farmers protect and restore private lands, creating bird-friendly environments for millions of migrating birds - like this flooded corn field.

NC coastal farmlands are essential wintering areas for large numbers of arctic birds, like Tundra Swans, Ibis and Snow Geese, traveling along the Eastern Migratory Flyway.

Pre-flight Line Up.
Sandhill Cranes watching their neighbors take off from the Bernardo NWR flight deck. Think of them as at the gate, waiting for Group 5 to board...oh, and they'll need to check overhead baggage at the gate.
