A soft, summer rain is magical by itself. The crisp clean smell of cleanliness and the soft patter of drops falling on leaves refreshes the soul. When you add the tender face of a fawn to the mix.. it's pure sugar.

What's the last wildlife encounter you had?

This little one doesn't care about no signs! Happy Saturday! Just a short and sweet post for today.

Today is National Wildlife Day.

It is a day to bring awareness to all our amazing wildlife and their importance on the planet's survival. Each and every creature, yes mosquitos and snakes, have a purpose and weight on our ecosystem. Without one of the checks, the balances will crumble.
I've only photographed a teeny, tiny handful of the creatures in America, much less the world, and I'm extremely blessed to have seen the ones I have.

Little ways you can help:
*Don't mow before Mother's Day (Pollinators)
*Don't clear cut property (birds, small mammals, owls/predators)
*Don't use rat bait ( causes unnecessary death in predators)
*Stop overbuilding in towns (not every acre needs a house)
*Stop feeding wildlife for our own enjoyment

Support our parks, refuges, and other entities that preserve land for our wildlife to thrive in. Just in my life time, there have been over 1 billion acres of forest lost to deforestation globally. Over 50 million hectares in just American in the past 24 years. That hurts our wildlife in huge ways.

Wildlife is more than just the cuddly cubs and cute raccoon babies... they are birds, pollinators, predators, grazers, and so much more.

Set back in a holler, a simple log cabin has survived for over 100 hundred years. The soil is tinted with the stories of the decades before us, and ohhh the tales they must stuff away in the various clumps of dirt. The sun shines down on the old tin roof, warming the darkness that is housed inside the walls. Spring time always brings beautiful dogwoods in full bloom, and then rusts and golds fill the trees in autumn. Somewhere, further back in the holler, a mother bear and her cubs can be heard rustling around in the leaves that have already created a blanket on the earth's floor. The smell of the fireplace in winter can still be detected in crevices of the river rock chimney, if you close your eyes hard enough.

I swear I heard a banjo playing as I walked away.

Who won?!?

I wish I had an answer for you but I don't know. This was one brave squirrel.

I have many, many trail cameras but this was a first for me. I thought y'all might enjoy.

Peach flavored highlights fight low lying clouds. A touch of color peeks over a ridge to view life on the other side. Grayness beings to vanish as fire rises above the horizon. The sun sips the fruit flavored daquiri as night slips to the other side of the sky.

Good morning!

Deer trot through the dew damp grass rushing for the shade of the forest. The sun begins to crest the tree tops and dampness of the midnight dew shrinks in the morning heat.
The smell of spring lingers heavily in the sultry, dawn atmosphere. A statuesque magnolia blooms on the tree line, spritzing the world with her sweet perfume.
Spring wildflowers dot the meadows in a rainbow of color, and insects liven up the orchestra with symphony of winged notes. It's a time of birth and pollinating.

The cycle of life.

That moment that the veil lifts, things shift. Life flows in the right direction, smooth and peaceful, like raindrops in a creek.
Once a barrier is removed from the conversation, the exchange can take place. A give and take of epic proportions.
Once the blindness is blown away, the world can finally see.

Her young is beginning to wander off alone. Short excursions, but the feral is creeping in. She remains at a distance, watching. Close enough to protect, far enough for danger. She watches him run, play, hunt, and explore, the future of her bloodline. His youth makes him vulnerable, naive to the uncertainty of his next step. Threats exist as humans are his closest neighbor. That burrow under the old shed was safe, but now he'll learn of the reality of survival.

She watches from a distance as the future of her bloodline grows up.

Life begins in a fragile state. That first stretch, the first breath, or even the first warmth of the sun, all encourage growth and movement. The hunt for sustenance, the taste of that first rain drop, or even the chill of stiff breeze, create a desire to keep moving, keep searching.
Survival of the fittest, it's a dog eat dog world out there. Feast or be the feast, it's a brutal reality. The cycle of life, the beginning and the end.

Treasure it. Capture it. Remember it.
