I want to really focus you guys in on what’s going on in this world.
During a recent press briefing, Karoline Leavitt was asked about the SAVE Act and confirmed that the bill would require documentation proving citizenship that matches your current legal name in order to register to vote.
She called the process “simple” and “common sense.”
But the reality is not that simple for millions of Americans. It may be for her, it may be for me, and it may be for you. But.
Around 69 million women in the United States have birth certificates that do not match their current legal name because they changed their name after marriage.
The Brennan Center reports that more than 21 million Americans do not have easy access to documents like passports or birth certificates, which are the very documents this bill would require.
So when people say this bill “doesn’t block anyone,” it is worth looking past the talking points and asking who it actually affects. If you only care if it impacts you, you’re privileged.
You are choosing to ignore the setback on American rights because all people care about is voter fraud with non-citizens (notice I recognize them as humans and not “illegals” or “aliens”). But did you know that they lied about that information as well?
More information about those statistics btw:
States that have investigated non-citizen voting continue to find virtually none. Utah reviewed its voter rolls for nearly a year and found one confirmed case of non-citizen registration and zero instances of non-citizen voting.
Zero.
Before jumping into the comments repeating political slogans, take the time to look at the policy itself and what was actually said in that briefing.
And if the support for policies like this is coming from fear about immigrants or assumptions about who “should” be voting without understanding the lies you’re told about the purpose, then it might be time to step back and examine where those views are coming from.
Look past the rhetoric. Look at the facts.
