🚨🚔 DURHAM POLICE ARREST 32 PEOPLE, SEIZE 17 GUNS IN MAJOR THREE-DAY CRIME OPERATION!

🔥 BULL CITY, POLICE JUST RELEASED THE RESULTS OF A MAJOR CRACKDOWN ACROSS SEVERAL DURHAM NEIGHBORHOODS!

Durham Police say 32 people were arrested, 17 fi****ms were seized, and drugs were confiscated during a three-day enforcement operation targeting areas experiencing increased criminal activity.

The operation, called “Operation Autumn Guardian,” took place October 21–23, 2026, and involved the Durham Police Department’s Organized Crime Division working alongside the FBI Safe Streets Task Force.

Police reported a range of alleged offenses, including possession of stolen fi****ms, unlawful possession of fi****ms, drug distribution offenses, felony conspiracy, breaking and entering, and fleeing to elude arrest.

Some individuals also faced outstanding warrants or received citations for lesser offenses.

One juvenile was arrested and charged, but police did not release identifying information.

IMPORTANT: These were separate arrests involving different allegations. Not everyone arrested was accused of violent crime, and criminal charges do not establish guilt.

Born in Warsaw, North Carolina, on October 10, 1912, Mrs. Ferrell eventually made Durham her home in 1945.

🌺 COMMUNITY: In 2024, Durham County officially proclaimed Catherine Ferrell Gardening Week, honoring her dedication to gardening, beautification, and community service.

✈️ ADVENTURE: At 100 years old, she boarded an airplane for the first time to travel to Israel. At 112, she took another trip, this time to Hawaii with her family!

🏆 HISTORY MAKER: Her age has been officially validated by the Gerontology Research Group. She is recognized as North Carolina’s oldest known living resident and, as of October 2026, the second-oldest known living person in the entire United States!

Before gospel music filled stadiums and crossed into mainstream America, one Black woman used her powerful voice to inspire millions and support the fight for freedom.

Her name was MAHALIA JACKSON.

Known as one of the greatest gospel singers in American history, Mahalia Jackson was also a civil rights activist, fundraiser, and trusted supporter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Today, Friday, October 30, 2026, Durham rapper Jooselord is bringing music, love and community together for the first-ever ALL ONYX WORLD, a free, multi-venue cultural festival honoring the life of his late son, Onyx Nyne Williams.

It’s a father’s promise that his son’s name, memory and impact will never be forgotten.

💔 THE STORY BEHIND ALL ONYX WORLD

Onyx Williams was just 4 years old when doctors diagnosed him with a high-grade glioma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, in December 2024.

His family fought alongside him as he underwent treatment.

As his condition worsened, people across Durham and North Carolina came together to support Onyx and his family.

Local musicians, organizations, athletes and community members helped make some of his final wishes and experiences possible.

On March 3, 2026, Onyx passed away at just 5 years old.

But his father, whose real name is Raheem Williams, decided that his son’s story would not end there.

Instead of allowing grief to silence him, Jooselord began organizing something that could bring the same community that loved his son together again.

🚨 25-YEAR-OLD DURHAM MOTHER KILLED ON I-40 AFTER BEING STRUCK BY MULTIPLE VEHICLES — FAMILY SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS

DURHAM, NC — A YOUNG MOTHER IS GONE, A CHILD HAS LOST HIS MOTHER, AND HER FAMILY IS STILL TRYING TO UNDERSTAND HOW SHE ENDED UP DEAD ON ONE OF THE BUSIEST HIGHWAYS IN THE TRIANGLE.

A Durham family is grieving the tragic death of 25-year-old Niyanna Autry, who was struck by multiple vehicles along Interstate 40 near Davis Drive.

The deadly incident happened during the early morning hours of Friday, October 23, 2026.

According to the Durham Police Department, officers responded around 1:30 a.m. to reports of a pedestrian being struck on eastbound I-40 near Davis Drive, not far from Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

When officers arrived, Autry was already dead.

Investigators determined that she had been struck by multiple vehicles, but the circumstances leading up to her death remain unclear.

💔 HER FAMILY WANTS THE WORLD TO KNOW WHO NIYANNA REALLY WAS.

Speaking with WRAL, Autry’s sister, Nora Oakley, described her as a loving, family-oriented young woman who took pride in raising her son.

She enjoyed spending time with relatives, watching movies and welcoming loved ones into her home.

To the public, this may be another tragic highway death.

But to her family, Niyanna was a daughter, a sister and a mother whose life meant far more than a news headline.

🚨 QUESTIONS STILL SURROUND HER DEATH.

As of WRAL’s October 28 report, Durham police had not publicly explained how Autry came to be on the interstate or the sequence of events that led to her being struck.

The vehicles involved had not been publicly identified.

Her family is still seeking answers about what happened that night.

Oakley told WRAL:

“As of now, we don’t know anything.”

🚧 THE INCIDENT SHUT DOWN PART OF I-40 FOR HOURS.

The investigation forced the closure of eastbound Interstate 40 between Davis Drive (Exit 280) and South Miami Boulevard (Exit 281).

Traffic backed up for miles during the morning commute, including delays along Interstate 885.

All eastbound lanes eventually reopened that morning.

But while traffic returned to normal, one Durham family was left facing a loss that will never be normal.

🕊️ A LIFE CUT SHORT AT JUST 25 YEARS OLD.

Niyanna Autry had a child to raise, family to love and an entire future ahead of her.

Her loved ones are now grieving while hoping investigators can establish exactly what happened.

There are still unanswered questions, and it would be wrong to speculate about the circumstances surrounding her death.

What is confirmed is that a young Durham mother lost her life in a devastating incident on I-40.

🚨 ANOTHER DOWNTOWN DURHAM BUSINESS IS CLOSING — POUR TAPROOM SHUTTING DOWN AFTER 9 YEARS! 🍺

DURHAM, NC — AFTER NEARLY A DECADE OF SERVING THE BULL CITY, POUR TAPROOM IS CALLING IT QUITS. AND THIS TIME, IT’S FOR GOOD.

Downtown Durham is losing another familiar nightlife destination.

Pour Taproom, located at 202 N. Corcoran Street, Suite 200, will permanently close after its final day of service on Saturday, October 31, 2026.

The announcement comes after more than nine years in business.

For longtime Durham residents and visitors, Pour Taproom offered something a little different from your traditional neighborhood bar.

When the business opened in 2017, it introduced a self-service experience featuring 64 taps offering craft b**r, w**e and c***r.

Customers received electronic wristbands that allowed them to pour their own drinks, sample different selections and pay by the ounce.

It was a concept that caught on during the craft b**r boom and helped make Pour a popular downtown gathering spot.

💰 SO WHY IS POUR TAPROOM CLOSING?

According to reporting by The News & Observer, co-owner Andrew Shaver said the business had experienced steadily declining revenue since late 2021.

Several factors contributed to the challenges:

🍺 Changing drinking habits: Consumers are drinking less alcohol, particularly among younger generations.

📉 Declining craft b**r enthusiasm: The excitement surrounding the craft b**r boom has cooled.

🏙️ Changing nightlife crowds: The younger customers, graduate students and professionals who once filled the establishment never fully returned after the pandemic.

Shaver explained that the rapid expansion of craft breweries over the past decade was difficult to sustain.

AND HERE’S SOMETHING ELSE THAT MAKES THIS CLOSING SIGNIFICANT.

Pour Taproom originally launched in Asheville before expanding into Durham, Charlotte, Wilmington and other markets.

With Durham’s closure, the company will no longer have a location operating in North Carolina.

🏢 WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE BUILDING?

Shaver said another business is expected to take over the downtown space.

However, the identity of that business and an opening date have not been publicly confirmed in the reporting reviewed.

THIS IS PART OF A BIGGER CONVERSATION HAPPENING ACROSS DURHAM.

Pour Taproom isn’t the only local establishment to face challenges.

🚨 DUKE MEDICAL SCHOOL REFERRED TO U.S. JUSTICE DEPARTMENT OVER RACIAL DISCRIMINATION FINDINGS

DURHAM, NC — ONE OF THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS MEDICAL SCHOOLS IN THE COUNTRY IS NOW FACING ESCALATING FEDERAL SCRUTINY OVER HOW IT SELECTS FUTURE DOCTORS.

Duke University School of Medicine has been referred to the U.S. Department of Justice following a federal civil rights investigation into its admissions practices, according to reporting published Thursday, October 29, 2026.

Federal investigators allege that Duke continued using race and indirect indicators of race when deciding which students would be admitted, even after the U.S. Supreme Court restricted race-conscious college admissions in 2023.

HERE’S WHAT FEDERAL INVESTIGATORS FOUND:

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) began investigating Duke in July 2025.

On September 8, 2026, its Office for Civil Rights issued findings that Duke’s medical school had intentionally discriminated against white and Asian applicants.

Investigators concluded that the admissions process violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act.

According to federal findings, the school used admissions criteria such as personal hardship and social justice advocacy in ways investigators believed could indirectly reveal an applicant’s race.

THE ADMISSIONS NUMBERS RAISED QUESTIONS.

For the 2024–2025 admissions cycle, federal investigators reported the following admission rates:

• Black applicants: 10%

• Hispanic applicants: 6.7%

• White applicants: 3.3%

• Asian applicants: 3.4%

Investigators also identified differences in average GPA and MCAT scores among admitted students.

However, admission-rate and test-score differences alone do not establish that an individual applicant was improperly admitted or denied. The federal agency’s findings also relied on admissions communications and other records.

SO WHAT DOES DUKE HAVE TO SAY?

Duke disputes the government’s conclusions.

The university maintains that applicants’ reported race and ethnicity are hidden from admissions committee members and that reviewers are instructed not to consider race in their decisions.

Following the latest referral, a Duke spokesperson expressed disappointment, saying the university had cooperated with federal investigators and provided information supporting its compliance with the law.

Duke maintains that it is committed to following federal law while preserving its academic mission.

WHY WAS THE CASE REFERRED TO THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT?

Federal officials previously gave Duke an opportunity to enter a voluntary agreement addressing the government’s findings.

The October 29 referral represents an escalation after federal officials said the matter had not been resolved voluntarily.

The Justice Department could pursue additional enforcement action, including negotiations or civil litigation.

IMPORTANT: A federal agency’s discrimination finding is not the same as a final court judgment. As of this update, a new lawsuit resulting from the October 29 referral had not been publicly confirmed.

THIS ISN’T DUKE’S ONLY FEDERAL ADMISSIONS CONTROVERSY.

In August 2026, the Justice Department separately announced findings of racial discrimination involving Duke University School of Law.

The medical school and law school cases are separate investigations.

DURHAM, NC — WHILE SOME LOCAL BUSINESSES ARE STRUGGLING WITH RISING COSTS, TOURISTS ARE POURING MORE THAN A BILLION DOLLARS INTO DURHAM’S ECONOMY.

The Bull City is officially a billion-dollar tourism destination, and the latest numbers show just how much attention Durham is getting from people across North Carolina, the country and beyond.

According to Discover Durham and a tourism impact study commissioned by Visit NC, Durham County welcomed a record 13.4 million visitors in 2025, generating $1.17 BILLION in visitor spending.

Those numbers represent an all-time high for the county.

📊 LET’S BREAK DOWN THE MONEY:

SO WHY ARE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE COMING TO DURHAM?

The Bull City has become a destination for far more than just Duke basketball.

Tourism officials point to several major attractions:

🏀 Duke University athletics and basketball.

⚾ Durham Bulls baseball.

🎭 Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC).

🛍️ The Streets at Southpoint.

🍽️ Durham’s restaurants, nightlife and food scene.

🏥 Duke Health and specialized medical care.

That last category might surprise some people.

Medical tourism is one of Durham’s major visitor drivers. Patients travel from outside the area for treatment at Duke Health, often bringing relatives who need hotels, restaurants and other services during extended stays.

And according to Discover Durham, approximately 70% of visitors come from within North Carolina, while 30% travel from outside the state.

💰 BUT HERE’S THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STORY.

Record tourism spending doesn’t mean every Durham business is getting rich.

ABC11 recently spoke with Josh Wittman, owner of The Federal on West Main Street, a Durham establishment that has been operating for more than two decades.

Wittman acknowledged that business is strong, but increasing costs for food, drinks and other supplies continue to make operating a business challenging.

That’s an important distinction.

A city can break tourism records while individual restaurant owners, workers and small businesses still struggle financially.

And while $1.17 billion sounds enormous, the growth rate was only 0.9% compared with 2024.

In other words, Durham is still growing as a destination, but visitor spending isn’t increasing as quickly as it once did.

🏙️ WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR DURHAM’S FUTURE?

Tourism helps support jobs, local businesses and public services through tax revenue.

Discover Durham and its partners are also working on long-term plans intended to strengthen tourism, improve visitor experiences and support local events.

But as Durham continues attracting millions of visitors, an important question remains:

HOW DO WE MAKE SURE THE PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY LIVE AND WORK IN DURHAM BENEFIT FROM ALL THIS MONEY?

Because tourism success should mean more than impressive headlines.
