📍 Vance Tousey House | Lawrenceburg, Indiana
Built around 1818, the Vance Tousey House is one of the oldest surviving homes in Lawrenceburg. The Federal style home was originally built by Samuel C. Vance, one of the city’s founders, at a time when the Ohio River served as the region’s primary transportation route.
The home later became associated with the Tousey family and today serves as the headquarters of the Dearborn County Historical Society. One of its most notable features is a circular staircase that extends from the first floor all the way to the attic.
The Tousey name may sound familiar to some of my Boone County followers. Just a few miles away in Burlington stands the historic Tousey House Tavern, built in 1822 by Erastus Tousey. The Lawrenceburg and Burlington properties are connected through the same pioneering Tousey family, whose members helped shape communities on both sides of the Ohio River during the early 1800s.
The Vance Tousey House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000 and remains one of southeast Indiana’s most significant historic landmarks.
