When Jon stood up to give his toast at Jess’s wedding at Cedar Lakes Estate, I wasn’t ready for what was to come. He told the room how a lightning strike on 9/10/2001, a house fire next door, and a morning drive to school saved his life on September 11, 2001. Jess was the daughter he drove to school that day. I cried through the whole speech behind the camera.

Jon shared his story yesterday in a post for the 25th anniversary. I wanted to share his words here, along with a few images from Jess’s wedding and both of Jane’s, the small one in 2020 and Brooklyn Botanic Garden in 2021.

His full post is linked in my stories today.

Twenty-five years ago tonight, a bolt of lightning may have saved my life.

On September 10, 2001, our next door neighbor’s house got hit by lightning and burned down. My three kids watched the volunteer fireman put out the fire and when we put them to bed after midnight we told them that “you just saw the worse tragedy...someone’s home burning down.”

I left my house every morning at 6am to commute to work but on 9/11/2001 I drove my eldest daughter to her new school and got to work at 9am instead of 7am.

My office was on the 105th floor at the World Trade Center 2. Three of my colleagues got trapped in my office and died there that day along with 173 other Aon employees.

Aon NYC was the single best insurance brokerage office in the Industry in 2001. We worked hard and laughed hard and knew each other and respected each other. Our kids would come into the office and would look out the office windows with innocent amazement.

Often over the last 1300 weeks I think about why I was late to work that day and got another day, another year, another 25 years when Kevin and Doug and 3000 others did not.

There is no satisfying answer. Maybe that is the part of the lesson of 9/11.

We spend an enormous amount of our lives worrying about so many things that just don’t matter. The deal. The money. The stuff. The arguments. Then in a matter of minutes, the world can remind us what actually matters.

NEVER FORGET can NOT just be a sign we raise on September 11th. It needs to be a real action.

Remember the people who went to work that morni

SHARE YOURS IN THE COMMENTS. WINNER GETS A MASON JAR FROM A 2010 WEDDING.

The backstory : There’s a shop on Nantucket that’s sold the same handwoven baskets for nearly a century, and this week a two word sign hanging from its ceiling became the most talked about storefront in the country. We have no interest in the argument that followed. What we do have an interest in is the format. So we started a list of our own. A few honest things we’d hang from our ceiling, if we ever opened a shop on the island.

My grandmother is 93 today. Sharing these photographs from thirteen years ago when Dara and I took her and my grandfather to Nantucket and Cape Cod, just the four of us. It was the first time they got to know us as adults. It opened up a part of my relationship with them I hadn’t gotten to in almost thirty years.

If you’re reading this and still have grandparents, I HIGHLY recommend a couple nights away with them. Ask the questions you’ve always wanted to ask. Spend the time.

My grandfather called her “the little general.” He’d been calling her that for several decades, and he was never wrong about it. She truly is THE little general of our family.

Happy birthday, Nannie.

The way you look at each other? We see it every time we raise our cameras. That unguarded, full-hearted, how did I get this lucky kind of love.

Now imagine turning that same lens on yourself.

There’s a moment right after the ceremony when everything shifts. The formality lifts. The day becomes yours again.

For Brittany and John, that shift came with a ch*****ne tower at the end of the aisle. Bottles popped, glasses filled, guests helping themselves on the way to cocktail hour. It set a tone for the rest of the evening that was just effortlessly celebratory.

And then came the quiet part. A vintage Hacker-Craft waiting at the dock. Brittany and John climbed aboard, their guests waving from the shore as the boat pulled away from The Sagamore and out onto Lake George. We made our way to a little spot called Turtle Island for portraits, just the four of us and the most incredible early September sky. Late summer in the Adirondacks has this quality where the light feels like it’s holding its breath. Storm clouds were rolling in over the mountains, and honestly, we couldn’t have styled it better if we tried.

This is the kind of wedding day we live for. When one moment pours into the next and the whole thing feels like a story worth telling.
