People walked in not knowing what they were about to witness with the horses and walked out unable to find the words for what they felt, horse lover or not. I stood in the corner of the ring with my camera and tried to hold onto all of it. Saturday night was the liberty celebration. More photos to come, but for now, sharing a few highlights.
Sunday we watched Patrick and Avery on the big screen in the Rescued Hearts Film, a documentary now traveling the world. Patrick and Avery, I love you both so much. What you are building is something the world needs more of.

In October of 2024, I spent the afternoon with Peggy, her husband, and a wonderful chaos of their 5 border collie dogs for a family portrait session. As the session was winding down, she asked me if we could spend a little time with Ernie. Just the two of them.

I have thought about that moment a lot since this evening when I saw her tribute to him posted. I think she already knew in her heart that the years she had left with him were getting shorter, and she wanted something real to hold onto before they were gone. She did not say that out loud, but she did not need to.

Peggy wrote in her goodbye to him that he gave her "gentle love", and if you have ever had a horse like that in your life, you know exactly what those words mean and how much weight they carry.

When I saw the news she shared this evening, the first thing I said to myself was that I am so glad she has those images to remember him by. Rest easy, Ernie. 🖤

The power starts behind, pushing through the snow and sending a spray into the air, while the leading leg reaches forward with intention, like the ground is something to meet, not just follow. There is that brief feeling of lift between strides, balanced, expressive, and full of contained strength, something the compact, sure footed Icelandic does so naturally.
His tail swishes in rhythm with the movement, relaxed even in the effort. The light catches his mane and tail, turning them into ribbons of gold against the white snow, his chestnut coat glowing warmly in the contrast.
This is the feeling of the Icelandic canter, strength gathered from behind, freedom expressed in front, and the kind of beauty in motion I always hope to be able to capture through my lens.

Indigo, glowing in her first true winter coat. A Texas girl experiencing her first Maine winter, and oh boy, it’s been a doozy of a cold one. She’s wearing it beautifully!

She’s a rescued mare whose path has led her to become part of a liberty team doing meaningful work all around the country. Every horse has their own journey and walks their own path, just like we do.

I’m passionate about capturing and sharing their stories, and the powerful ways they transform not only themselves, but also the people who love them. There’s more to come, and I hope you’ll follow along.

If you follow my work or know me well, you know how much horses mean to me and how often they find their way in front of my camera. Love them or not, I think we can all appreciate how fully they live in the moment. They’re honest, trusting, and being around them always makes us slow down and really notice what’s in front of us.
One of my favorite ways to photograph horses is when they’re completely at liberty, free to move, explore, and simply be themselves with no restraints. There’s something special about watching them choose where to stand, when to move, and how to engage with the world around them. It feels like an honest exchange, and I love the way those moments translate through the lens.
There has been a lot of buzz since the start of the new year that this is the Year of the Horse in the Chinese zodiac, which feels fitting as I look forward to the new year focusing on the freedom and presence horses show me in my own life and work.
Horses have a way of meeting each moment as it comes. Working around them more and more has taught me how grounding it can be to focus on what’s right here, without overthinking it. I need more of that! I don’t live like a horse, of course, but photographing them continually brings me back to that mindset.
So here we are in Maine, freezing our noses (or muzzles) off, yet even in the cold there’s still warmth to be found in the simple moments right in front of us. ❄️🤍

“Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” ~ Dr. Seuss

I keep coming back to that quote as I look at these images, the original photo, the edit, and Equine Liberty Organization’s new logo. This was the very first time I photographed Avery working with Leo at liberty (meaning no ropes, no constraints, just free), I didn’t fully realize it then, but that day would become one of those moments you look back on and feel differently about, especially now.

I remember standing in that field watching the two of them just be together. No pressure, no plan, just this quiet, honest connection unfolding right in front of me. I’ve photographed them many times since, but even though the image isn’t anything epic, now that he’s gone it feels a litte more special.

That is the beauty of freezing a moment in time, isn’t it?

When I first found out that this photo — that moment — became the inspiration for the new ELO logo, it hit me in a really meaningful way. To think that something I captured early on in their journey together, before any of us knew where their journey would lead, now represents the heart and soul of what ELO stands for…it’s hard to put that feeling into words.

Leo truly embodied the power of liberty. You could see it in the way he grew more confident, the way he expressed himself, the way he trusted people. And now, even though he isn’t physically here anymore, his spirit and his story will continue to touch people through this logo.

And for me, this memory, this tiny slice of time that I didn’t know would matter so much, now holds a deeper value than I ever expected. What I once saw as just a beautiful moment between a girl and her horse has become a piece of him that will continue to touch hearts for years to come. ❤️
