I’ve recently seen some posts from fellow photographers criticizing newer photographers for offering lower-priced sessions or for having what they consider to be “lower quality” work.
As someone who is newer to photography, I want to say this respectfully: there is room for all of us.
Yes, I am still building my experience. I don’t claim to have the years of experience, extensive equipment, or established clientele that some photographers have. I’m learning, growing, and improving with every session—and I’m proud of the work I’m creating along the way.
I also intentionally keep my prices affordable.
I’m a full-time teacher and a mother, and photography is a side business that I started because I genuinely love creating beautiful photographs and capturing memories for families. I understand that spending $300, $500, or more on professional photography simply isn’t realistic for every hardworking family. That doesn’t mean those families don’t deserve beautiful, meaningful photographs.
If I can provide someone with quality images of their family at a price that fits within their budget, that is something I’m proud of.
I’ve also seen comments suggesting that photographers offering lower prices will “be gone within 3–6 months.” Maybe some will be. Maybe some won’t. But assuming that someone’s business isn’t legitimate or won’t last simply because they are newer or charge less is unfair.
Not every photographer is pursuing photography as their sole source of income. Some of us are teachers, parents, students, or people with full-time careers who simply love photography and want to turn that passion into something meaningful.
Competition is a natural part of any industry. If someone chooses to lower their prices, offer different packages, or serve a different clientele, that doesn’t diminish the value of another photographer’s work. There is a client for everyone.
I have nothing but respect for photographers who have spent years building their businesses. I hope to continue learning from those who came before me and eventually reach that level of experience myself.
But I also believe that being new doesn’t mean I should be belittled, and offering affordable photography doesn’t mean I don’t value the work I provide.
I’m not trying to take anyone’s clients. I’m simply trying to build something of my own, make photography accessible to families who may not otherwise be able to afford it, and enjoy something I genuinely love.
There is room for experienced photographers. There is room for beginners. There is room for luxury photography and affordable photography. We don’t have to tear each other down to succeed.
Support your fellow photographers. Educate when you can. Encourage when you can.
