JAPANESE MAPLE IN INFRARED - Love the bones and curves of this favorite tree at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond. Original image included, along with faux color version and monochrome. The "triplets" allow you to work through the image. Sometimes you prefer one version over another. These are from Nikon D90 converted to 590nm.

New Life Photos - March 2020 Notes

Sharing the latest New Life Photos blog post, "Mirrorless Moments Captured" and upcoming workshops and other fun learning opportunities.

Many of us would respond with, "It's about time." And, it probably is. Good thing there are always opportunities to keep warm and practice getting close with macro without fighting the perpetual, untimely breezes. I'm ready to get back out in the gardens to immerse myself in color and light. Here's....

WHAT I LOVE about the Eastern Shore of Virginia, and Chincoteague Island, is that it does not disappoint and continually offers opportunities to discover beauty and diversity in the scenes where nature and man connect. It's more than the birds and the horses and marshes and shorelines. Much more...
Mark Hilliard and I will be back up there in November (12-15). We'd love to have you join us and share with you this special place. For more info and to register, visit https://www.newlifephotos.com/photography-workshops/eastern-shore-photo-workshop/

WHAT I KNOW ... I need a flower every single day - in person or revisiting an image. Today, I revisited the same image unintentionally. Today, I used a blurred texture and masking to interpret. Last March I interpreted the same image with Topaz Impression. Today's image FEELS better to me, not because it is better but because I am in a different space. An interesting experiment would be to revisit this same image a year from now and see where it takes me ... I really had no idea that I had selected a previously processed image as I started with the raw images to make my choice.

MOTION IN THE OCEAN - It was a less-than-colorful sunrise, but the clouds were wonderful. This is a 14-second exposure, held still for about half the time and then slowly moved slightly left and right on tripod to create this look. Minimal processing of image in ACR only. Fancy footwork done in the field.

BUD AND BLENDED MOTION - As spring buds begin to appear, so do ideas on how to interpret. This image is a blend of two images; the texture is a motion blur with masking to reveal the bud. Will be exploring these options in the Richmond Gardens in April. Visit www. newlifephotos.com for more info.

SUBTLE AND DIFFERENT or BOLD AND DIFFERENT. How you choose to interpret your subjects is all about your creative vision and the choices you make in the field and in post. I love that we get a second wave of opportunity to take things in different directions. Columbine with French Kiss Textures and Orchid with Topaz Studio 2, Abstraction & Impression. YOU DO YOU.

SPRING GARDENS IN RICHMOND - COLOR, SHADOWS AND LIGHT in the gardens of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is one of my all-time favorite places to photograph any time of year. Spring is effusive with blooms of so many varieties. When photographing gardens and flowers, there are many intimate landscapes and small stories waiting to shine their light for you. Our "Richmond Blooms" Workshop highlights three amazing gardens - Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, Agecroft Hall & Gardens and Maymont Park - each different in essence and personality. Consider joining me and Mark Hilliard on a garden and flower immersion ... All garden admissions included and creative processing in classroom sessions will help move your images up the interpretive ladder. INFRARED IN THE GARDENS - This is an awesome way to take advantage of time in the gardens when the light is awful for color imagery. Here are two from Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond, captured at 590nm and processed differently (stone archway final images utilizes Topaz Buzz Sim B/W II). During our "RICHMOND BLOOMS" workshop in April, Mark Hilliard and I have a few loaners available for folks to try out, and we're ready to move you forward with whatever IR camera you may have (in the field and the classroom). WHAT YOU SEE isn't always what IT IS. - Such is the case with this image. You see, Horton House on Jekyll Island, Georgia, looks nothing like this. However, in my mind, it offers anyone many lessons in seeing "beyond the thing." This is a small portion of one of the walls that I've interpreted to express how I feel about it using layers of sharp and soft focus, a French Kiss Texture (Heavens) and a levels adjustment... Go where you want to go with your images. Be surprised.

CLEMATIS THREE WAYS - I've spent most of the day working on and writing my upcoming blog post. After a break at the gym, I needed a flower to clear my head. Here is a clematis up close - one using Topaz Studio 2, Impression and Cezanne recipe; one in color using Nik Color Efex Pro 4 and one taking the processed color into Nik Silver Efex Pro 2 for black/white version. Each one looks and feels different. When I process, I don't always have a plan. It's a go with the flow after doing basic adjustments and clean-up. Lots of opportunities coming up to join me in the gardens ... #flowers #flowerphotography #macrophotography #TopazStudio2 #Impression #nikcollectionbydxo #monochromeflowers #monochrome #clematis #inthegarden #visitrichmond #flowerlove

ELEGANT DRAPING is what wisteria is best at, along with its beautiful purple tendrils and sweet fragrance. Love photographing spring flowers and gardens? Consider "Richmond Blooms" workshop in April with me and Mark Hilliard. We'll have Lensbaby loaners that capture beauty in a different way. This image is just one example - minimal editing - of what you can get right out of the camera. CARNATION STILL LIFE - Growing up, we had a greenhouse business around the block near our yard. When they threw out carnations that weren't perfect, we would run to the pile and make bouquets for our mom and our teachers, wrapping those in damp paper towels and aluminum foil. These bring back good memories. #stilllife, #carnations #flowers #replicasurfaces #litra #mirrorless #nikonz6 #tamron90mm #withmytamron #flowerphotography

EVER JUST NEED A FLOWER? Me, too. Wisteria interpreted with a Lensbaby (probably Velvet, but not certain as I was playing with several). The beauty of Lensbabies is the soft, selective focus and beautiful backgrounds that you get right in the camera. Minor refinements to this image (a bright area at bottom right - not there now). Love the Lensbaby products.

GOING WITH THE FLOW IN PINK AND PEONIES of Spring. What's unusual is that these were made with a 50mm lens I rarely use. No doubt, I added a supplemental close-up lens, like the Nikon 6T to get even closer. An extension tube would have done the same, and then some, if I stacked them. When you photograph flowers in close, pay attention to the flow of petals and see where it takes you.
Our Richmond Blooms workshop in April is an awesome time to explore amazing gardens and practice capturing flowers and more in different ways using new and old techniques. Join me and Mark Hillard for explorations in the gardens of Richmond. Here's the link: https://www.newlifephotos.com/photography-workshops/richmond-flower-garden-photography-workshop/

DUNE MOUNTAINS ABSTRACT - The light all day was mostly even and sometimes flat - no major magic moments on this day. And, then, just yards away from a bright yellow front loader, THIS appears. Could have stayed there for hours (yes, hours). There was so much to discover in this OBX dune mountain.

AGECROFT HALL & GARDENS IN SPRING - When you photograph gardens, it's easy to get lost in the blooms. Don't forget to include features that speak to the character of each place. Agecroft is unique in its story and style. The manor was shipped from England to Richmond in the 1920s and restored. The grounds reflect the "order and opulence of English Gardens." We will visit Agecroft during our Richmond Blooms workshop in April. Here's the link for more info: https://www.newlifephotos.com/photography-workshops/richmond-flower-garden-photography-workshop/ (Garden admissions included)

RICHMOND BLOOMS from last April ...There are so many ways to interpret the gardens and every bloom within it. And while I love to use textures and other software to interpret my images, I work in the field to get the best starting point. That means working with light and color and backgrounds and breezes. These three are JUST as I captured them in the field - no crops, no filters, no extra magic juice - JUST what I saw and what I felt. Join me and Mark Hilliard in April for our workshop that celebrates flower and garden magic in premier gardens, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, for starters. OBSCURITY - Yes, that's my choice for this third time processing this wonderful tree on Jekyll Island, Georgia. So, why three times? And, why "obscurity?" (I choose the unknown portion of its definition; and the choice felt right.) We change how we view subjects, how they make us feel and what we know about "everything," including processing. I'm a tree lover, and I know that the next time I visit any of my favorites in any place, there will be change... (For this, Topaz Studio 2, Impression, Obscurity at 81% and some local adjustments with Nik Viveza.)
Want to see some magical places? Join me and Mark Hilliard on Jekyll Island in March for our Georgia Coast Workshop. We explore other areas, but the boneyard is just down the road from our home base. Here's the link: https://www.newlifephotos.com/photography-workshops/georgia-coast-photo-workshop/

DID YOU KNOW that beyond the goodness of lighthouses and fishing villages of the Outer Banks is a "fairy forest?" Well, that's what I call it because that's how it feels every time I visit. Come join me and Mark Hilliard for our Outer Banks Winter Workshop and follow me into that wonderful place. Yes, we'll work long exposures throughout our time together, but this place just makes me giddy every time I visit. While Hurricane Florence was relentless, the spirit of the folks on the Crystal Coast is stronger. Even now, the beauty of the area "stands tall". Looking forward to being here and sharing the uniqueness of the area. Did you know that it is one of the very few places on the East Coast where you can photograph both sunrise and sunset over the Atlantic Ocean? Join me and Nicole Collins Deen on this adventure.
This is one of my favorites! Wonderful wabi sabi, old cars, grist mills, covered bridge and more. Includes exclusive access to one mill that is just exquisite. Only TWO spaces left for this one.
I like your infrared especially, something I have never tried. It would be good to get into it and would work in my next book on landscape photography. See ya at the Moats conference later this year.
