As I started to lose daylight and the part of the trail I was on was overflowing with water from the lake so I really couldn’t go much further - I saw this Belted Kingfisher across the water! These are super cropped photos but I just love the difference in feather appearance because you can definitely tell which was before and which was after the dive 🐟

The Downy Woodpecker is the smallest woodpecker in North America, primarily living in forested areas and found nesting in tree cavities. They are virtually identical in plumage pattern to the larger Hairy Woodpecker, though they are not closely related. An easy way you can identify which species you are seeing is to look at the length of its bill. The Downy Woodpecker’s bill is shorter than its head, whereas the Hairy Woodpecker’s bill is approximately equal to its head length. You can also look for black spots on its white tail feathers for identification.
Like other woodpeckers, they produce a drumming noise with their beak as they pecks into trees. This species drums are slower compared to other NA Woodpeckers. During breeding season, they return within 2 hectares of where they were born, nesting in a tree cavity. Males spend approximately half of the daylight hours pecking the nesting hole, in 20 min sessions. This takes about 2-3 weeks and normally measures 12-15cm wide and 20-30cm deep. (Source: Wikipedia)

Bonaparte’s Gull. Pennsylvania, USA.

“Breeding adults have black heads, red legs, and large white triangles in the wingtips that contrast with the gray wings. Nonbreeding birds are mostly white with grayish upperwings, white primaries (edged in black), and a gray spot on the cheek. Immatures are similar to nonbreeding adults but upperwing is edged in dark gray, and the tail is tipped in black.” (Source: AllAboutBirds.org)
