Want to know the secret to the “perfect” family photo session? 📸🤎

Here it is:

There really isn’t one.

At least, not in the perfectly coordinated, everyone-smiling-at-the-camera, nobody-got-a little cranky kind of way. 😉

The family sessions I love most are the ones where you actually get to be a FAMILY.

But there are a few things that can make your session feel easier, more relaxed and a whole lot more you:

✨ Start with Mum.
Choose an outfit you feel beautiful AND comfortable in first, then build everyone else’s outfits around yours. Mum is so often the person planning everything for everyone else. You get to feel good too!

✨ Let the kids be kids.
They don’t need to perform for me. Let them run. Let them laugh. Let them be silly. Let them cling to you for five minutes if that’s what they need. Some of my favourite photographs happen in the moments we never planned.

✨ Bring Granny. Bring Grandpa. Bring someone they love.
If there’s someone who is part of the fabric of your children’s lives right now, consider including them. Photographs across generations only become more valuable with time.

✨ Stop worrying about “perfect.”
Someone may refuse to smile. Someone might need a snack. A shirt may come untucked. Your toddler might suddenly decide that walking in the direction we need them to walk is deeply offensive. 😂

That’s okay.

✨ Trust me to guide you.
You don’t need to know how to pose, where to put your hands or how to make your children cooperate. I’ll give you direction when you need it and step back when the good stuff starts happening naturally.

Because ultimately, the secret to the perfect family session is being present.

Years from now, you’re not going to look at these photographs and wonder whether everyone behaved perfectly.

You’re going to notice how small your daughter’s hand was inside yours.

The way your son threw his whole body into a hug.

Dad carrying somebody who was supposedly “too big” to be carried.

Who your family was, right then.

And THAT is what we’re photographing. 🤎

And with fall around the corner, I’m ready for all of it. The fun, the tiny personalities, the kids who absolutely will NOT do what we planned... and the photographs that are better because of it. 🤎

One minute they’re learning how to hold a pencil…
the next they’re walking across a stage like they’ve got places to be and people to see.

Kindergarten graduation is their very first “I did it.”

“Hey… quick thing… can we do an engagement shoot tomorrow?”

Sure. Love a little spontaneity.

“…also I have a vision.”

Of course you do. I’m listening.

“I want to hang off a train.”

🚂

Cue me, spiraling slightly while simultaneously opening 47 tabs and asking myself WHERE DOES ONE ACQUIRE A TRAIN IN 24 HOURS?!

But… we made it happen.
Found the train. Beat the clock. Shot fast (like, super fast - as we ended up only having literally 20 minutes to make this happen).
Trusted the vision.

And somehow? Magic.

This frame right here… him holding on, her reaching out… cinematic, romantic, a little wild — exactly what they dreamed up.

So here’s your reminder:
Say yes to the bold idea.
Pitch the “crazy” concept to me!
