I didn't become an outdoorsy person until I was around 17 when I went to Central America. I was hooked! Following that trip, I got off the couch and went camping, backpacking, hiking, kayaking and snorkeling and even tried windsurfing and rock climbing! I still love being outdoors and taking my camera with me.

The April issue of Style Magazine is out on newsstands! I love shooting for Style's Dining Spotlight feature as I get to discover some pretty amazing spots like Oakwater American Bistro in Granite Bay, CA. Chef Daniel graduated from the California Culinary Academy and has worked at a Michelin star restaurant, so you can see why he has a fabulous restaurant!

Weekends are perfected with brunch out on the patio around the fire pit at Milestone in El Dorado Hills. I love this wonderful neighborhood restaurant with its great food and service. I have a weakness for pastries. French pastries are my absolute favorite because of all their buttery goodness. I also love making a 30 minute trip to Apple Hill in Camino, CA to pick up apple cider donuts and apple and blueberry dumplings. Their hot apple cider is out of this world too. Boa Vista Orchards is open year-round.

I'm a coffee addict! Every place and every country I visit, I have to sample their coffee. To date, the one place that has the best coffee is Italy. Just don't asked for iced coffee there because you'll get hot coffee with a cube of ice thrown in!

Coming in second is the coffee in South India. I visited the state of Kerela years ago and fell in love with the locally grown coffee. Although I brought some back, I could never replicate the same flavor as I had there. (This photo below was taken at an Airbnb I stayed at last month where I had the opportunity to photograph food and lifestyle.)

I never thought that I'd ever be photographing food but is now such a huge part of what I do. The newspaper I freelanced for needed restaurant/food shots for a weekly featured restaurant and that's how I got started in food photography.

These photos below are from a recent shoot at Brisas Do Sul in Folsom and can be seen in the January 2019 issue of Style Magazine. (Some of the photos the restaurant is using for advertising/social media.)

It's not very often that I get to spend the night at a farm photographing food and lifestyle on site. It's a dream come true! Here are a few photos of dinner being prepped. The owner of the property is an amazing chef. Along with an assistant, she made a number of plant-based dishes that were out of this world! Some of the images will be in the May issue of Mother Earth News Living magazine.

During the course of my photography career, I've taken thousands of photos of stunning sunsets, interesting faces, and beautifully presented food, yet this photo of the lions is still my favorite. I've made hundreds of dollar off of this photo but kept none of it. I promised myself that if I made any money from the photo I'd donate it to wildlife organizations, which I have. It won Popular Photography's Your Best Shot in August 2015, judges have voted it Best of Show in county, state and club competitions and animal lovers around the country have purchased prints of the photos.

Every photographer dreams of taking at least one shot that will be life changing. A month before this photo was published in Popular Photography, Cecil the lion was killed by a trophy hunter. I hoped that this photo would instill compassion in the hearts of trophy hunters so that there would be fewer animals killed and more animals lovers in the world.

The editor for the newspaper I used to work for years ago had a motto: "Real people doing real things." That's how he wanted me to photograph people and even today, although I'm no longer with the paper, it's what I love doing. For that reason, I love lifestyle photography: keeping it looking unposed (yet it's directed) and keeping it looking real (though unlike in photojournalism it can be modified).
