Dallas Symphony Orchestra Cup at Prestonwood Polo Club north of Dallas, June 13, 2026. I will admit that I don't know squat about polo, but I learned several interesting details at Prestonwood. First, professional riders bring as many as 8-10 horses to a match and switch them out nearly every chukker (period). Next, Argentina is the dominant world power in polo. Third, those mallets are highly flexible - they bend as much if not more than golf clubs.

The Bolder Boulder 10K is hard to adequately describe. You just have to attend or participate to understand the event's scope and energy. Suffice to say, the race logged 47,500 finishers from all 50 states and 25 countries yesterday. The weather was great, the runners were hyped, the costumes were creative and the vibe was incredible.

Windjammer Track Classic at Englewood High School in, you guessed it, Englewood, CO., on May 9. Track and field is a blast for photographers because it offers so much variety - runners, throwers, jumpers, etc. Colorado high school athletes often use this meet as a tune up for the state meet the next weekend. The Windjammer is nostalgic for me; I competed in this meet as a Columbine High senior in 1990 (I made it to the second round in discus, but I didn't medal).

FEI World Cup Finals 2026 for equestrian jumping and dressage, Fort Worth, April 11-12, 2026.
This is the Super Bowl of jumping and dressage. In all, riders from 22 countries competed. A Brit won dressage and an American won jumping. It was interesting to watch these competitions for the first time; The arena goes entirely silent during each run/performance. And the riders showed genuine emotion. One cried because her longtime horse, a 20-year-old named Gus, went into retirement after the race. FEI Dressage FEI Jumping

Coffin race at Frozen Dead Guy Days in Estes Park, CO., March 28, 2026.
Yes, there's a long story here - one that folks in Boulder and Larimer counties know well. Back in 1989, a woman and her son decided to freeze her father/his grandfather, Bredo Morstol, after he passed away. They kept him on dry ice in a Tuff Shed in the hills above Nederland, CO., for years in the hopes of someday unthawing and reviving him. Bredo might still be there; At least a few online sources indicate he is. Now, the (somewhat) close by town of Estes Park hosts a Frozen Dead Guy Days festival every year. The highlight is the coffin race, which which teams of seven must navigate an obstacle course with one team member riding in their homemade coffin. The race involves weaving around obstacles and doing quick challenges, like placing plastic flowers on fake graves. It was a blast to see.

The infamous Barbie Downhill race and freestyle monster-truck competition at 'Rednecks with Paychecks' in St. Jo, Texas, yesterday. The Barbie Downhill involves contestants riding Barbie cars and other flimsy, tiny vehicles down a steep hill (steeper than the pictures make it look). I don't know who won, but surprisingly, it didn't appear that anyone got seriously hurt. They're braver than me.

Red Bull Rancher Strong competition, San Antonio, Feb. 28, 2026. This competition is like American Ninja Warrior on the ranch. Competitors must go through a gauntlet of obstacles, including hanging bars, loading heavy sacks onto a wheelbarrow then pushing it, flipping tires, going over and under logs, climbing a hay-bail tower to ring a bell, and roping in a 'bull' of weights. Impressive stuff.
