From a handsome bluff overlooking the Mighty Missouri River along the ND-SD border. A marginal, forgotten landscape. I cant help to imagine what feeling would've been held by a passing group of Mandan, Arikara, or Sioux, witnessing a distant supercell thunderstorm churning over the prairie.

This was taken on August 24th, 2024 near present-day Mound City, SD. Named for nearby village mounds, Mound City is not far from the burial site of Sitting Bull, many ancient villages of long-past Missouri River peoples, and several spiritual landmarks.

This land, from the Missouri to the first stands of the Rocky Mountains -- the high plains -- is the scared corridor and special are its storms.

Yesterday I successfully defended my Master's thesis at the University of North Dakota, nearly two years after leaving the News industry to pursue graduate school. This research investigates what happens when storms "run into each other" and helps us understand how such an interaction influences the hazards they produce. This guidance may improve short-term forecasts and improve warning lead-times of hazards weather produced by severe local storms, particularly tornadoes.

I graduate with my M.S. in August before beginning my PhD in the fall semester, continuing my research on severe local storms.

Anyone ready for this yet!? I think I will be after the coming stretch of upper 90s and 100s here in eastern North Dakot...

This photo comes from one of my favorite areas of Michigan: southwestern Isabella and southeastern Mecosta Counties, near the lovely towns of Millbrook and Blanchard. Its a gorgeous area in the fall.
