This photo popped up in my queue this morning right after we finished getting ready for school. My three year old loves to pick her shoes out in the morning This morning it was her pink unicorn converse. I reached my hands out to help her slip them on and promptly held them up as she said, “I can do it all by my own.” And then we settled for a few minutes before we had to go to school, and up popped this photo. A mama helping her baby girl get into her shoes on her wedding day. I wondered how many times she had helped put her shoes on before. I wondered if she was thinking about it in those moments. I wondered if I’ll have a moment, years down the road, where I’ll help my baby get ready for an important day, and think about those unicorn sneakers. I hope she always feels as capable as she does today and confident in the knowledge that she can absolutely do it “all by her own.” But mostly, I hope she knows that as long as I’m around, she’ll never have to.
