Gary Mayes Photography

Gary Mayes Photography I took my first pictures with a pocket-sized instamatic in Yellowstone in 1976. It's been an on-off hobby ever since. Last year I decided it's time to go all in.

You can access some of my work on my Etsy store: GaryMayesPhotography.etsy.com MY STORY...

Almost 50 years ago, I spent the summer working in Yellowstone. Surrounded by the drama of Old Faithful, herds of Bison, and the Grand Tetons to the south, I fell in love with photography through the lens of a pocket-sized instamatic camera. I kept it up as a hobby but never got really serious. Until about

ten years ago, that is. It dawned on me that if I really loved capturing and creating beauty through photography, I needed to get serious about it. If I wanted to have art worth sharing with others, I needed to raise my game. I took classes. I started experimenting. I upgraded equipment. And, I started dreaming about photography as a center-piece of retirement. In January ’23 three things launched me into this new chapter. First, I did retire. Yay. Second, my colleagues sent me off with a pro-level mirrorless camera. Third, I took my wife and my new camera, on our first photography-focused trip: Venice, Italy. I know, tough assignment. However, I landed in Venice fighting bronchitis. I felt lousy. So, I slept in, abandoned my plan for pre-dawn wake-up calls to capture the sunrise. Running a slight fever made the bitterly cold weather painful. The cold killed my thoughts of blue-hour or late night photos. This trip of all trips to kick off my life as a photographer was falling apart. Sure, I schlepped my camera around Venice and I snapped a boatload of pictures. But it wasn’t fun. I felt horrible. I processed my photos when we got home and to my surprise, I found some I really loved. I posted one of them online right away and within an hour had a message from a friend who wanted to buy a copy for their home. It’s hard to explain how deeply that response encouraged me. I was still discouraged by disappointment over all the planned pictures I didn’t take. Yet, I’d succeeded snapping a picture that brought someone else great joy. That moment sealed the deal for me. It’s hard to explain, but sharing images that help people experience more of the beauty all around us is a joy I can hardly put into words. My hope is that my art rekindles memories or stirs people with fresh inspiration. I know there hardships exist all around the world, but there is also beauty to be found everywhere. I hope my photos touch people with a small experience of that beauty. You can obtain prints of my photos in multiple formats through at my Etsy store. My bio includes a link. You can also find me on Instagram as “fotoapprentice.”

What if you could enjoy the Italian Dolomites everyday?

You’ve watched the Olympic athletes and been stunned by the beauty of the mountains in the distance. Why not bring that beauty home with a museum quality fine art print of the Dolomites.

The Dolomites are a breathtaking mountain range at the southern end of the Alps. This valley (Funes) is just a few ridges away from the site of May Olympic events. I took this photo in Santa Maddalena this past May.

It’s 92 degrees…already? And I’m at grandson baseball game number 3 already this week. Wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Being a grandfather to four boys—and maybe #5 in Sept—is more than I could ask for. Lots more baseball to come this next decade!!!

What started as a simple request became an epic reminder of how stunning the desert can be.

A friend asked me if I’d photograph “Red Mountain.” She wanted it as a gift for her husband when they moved to a new home in Texas. Sure, I’m always up for a little challenge assignment. Then I realized, I didn’t know which of the desert buttes in the area was actually Red Mountain. (They all are kind of red in the right light.) Embarrassing, but easily solved.

I did a little recognizance and found a place where the mountain meets the Salt River. Sweet. Then a few days later, the clouds set up for a glorious sunset. The result? Breathtaking.

Streaking sunset clouds, mirror-like reflection on the water, and breathtaking colors that barely look real. These are the moments that I live for as a photographer.

Todd and Cathy, thanks for sending a picture of how it looks in your new home. I love it.

And, we miss you already.

This is just one of nearly 60 images available through my Etsy Store. And for the month of April everything in the store is 30% off.

I grew up knowing nothing about farming or about living in real winter. Instead, I was raised near the beach in Southern California where a winter day meant I couldn't wear shorts. But by living in different places I've fallen in love with the rustic beauty of a farm and the stark grays of winter.

So, for years I have been trying to capture a compelling photo of these Oaks in my friend's backyard--100+ acres of farmland on the central coast of California. Whenever we'd visit I'd take my camera outside to see what images I might create. Unfortunately, though the wild branches of these trees are captivating, so far, none of my photos really made the grade. This past visit, every morning we awoke to an ethereal blanket of dense fog. I even went out one morning in my bare feet trying to make capture the moment. Pro tip: don't ever try that. My feet were so cold, they hurt for 20 minutes after I came back in.

On the morning we were leaving for home, I began carrying our luggage out to the car in the pre-dawn light. The heavy moisture of the gray fog hung over everything. But, as I finished loading the luggage, I saw the orange glow of sunrise begin to form in the east. I grabbed my camera. Walked to the edge of the pasture--wearing shoes this time. And the moment almost framed itself.

Ansel Adam's famous statement, "bad weather makes for good photography" was never more true. The contrasts of dark and light, colors and grays, tac sharp and foggy blur are only surpassed by the leading lines of the fence and freshly turned dirt that lead the eye right to the big Oak.

It's such a simple photo with so much depth.
I hope it spurs your imagination a bit.
