Who was she—and what became of her crew?

A September 1944 hurricane exposed the “tired old bones” of this mysterious vessel on Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. According to the original press caption, even the island’s oldest residents and records could not identify her—and she may have been wrecked generations earlier.

The caption predicted that within weeks, southwest winds would cover the vessel with sand and return her to her grave, perhaps never to be seen again.

“Testing…is this thing on?”

This Portland salesman was photographed in 1931 demonstrating what the handwritten caption called a “new public address system.” With its tiny wall-mounted microphone and enormous horn, this was cutting-edge communication technology nearly a century ago.

This is one of those photographs where the story on the back changes everything.

This battered lifeboat came from the Uruguayan steamer Maldonado, which was torpedoed during World War II. According to the original press caption, the empty boat drifted approximately 1,200 miles for ten months before finally washing ashore on Ocracoke Island, North Carolina.

I brought this remarkable piece of history to life in today’s TikTok. The original vintage photograph is available from Vintage Image Photos on eBay.

Africa’s political map was changing rapidly in 1962.

This original AP wirephoto map was issued on October 2, one week before Uganda gained independence from Britain on October 9. The shaded territories were still under some form of outside rule.

Look closely and you’ll find names that have since changed or disappeared, including Upper Volta, Tanganyika, Bechuanaland, Nyasaland, Northern Rhodesia, Southern Rhodesia, Dahomey and Swaziland.

How many can you identify by their modern names?

This was no ordinary spacecraft seat.

The Soviet Kazbek “space couch” used in Soyuz capsules included a liner individually molded to fit its cosmonaut. The close fit helped distribute tremendous G-forces across the body and absorb the shock of launch, reentry and landing.

This original press photograph offers a remarkable look at the engineering created to keep early space travelers alive.

Eight years after World War II ended, Essen, Germany was rebuilding one block at a time.

As a major industrial center and home of the Krupp works, Essen had been heavily bombed during the war. This original 1953 press photograph shows a city returning to everyday life, with construction underway as streetcars, buses and pedestrians move through the streets.

The clipping preserved on the back reads, “Same Essen sector in 1953. Big strides were made in rebuilding.”

Kenny Rogers had spent four days trying to record “Islands in the Stream” alone before admitting he didn’t even like the song anymore. Then Barry Gibb suggested Dolly Parton. She happened to be in the same studio, joined Kenny at the microphone, and music history was made. Their chemistry was undeniable, but their love remained a lifelong friendship.

This rodeo clown deliberately made a charging bull chase him to save a rider trapped by the hand.

At the 1977 Ellensburg Rodeo, bull rider Jordie Thomsen became hung up after being thrown. Rodeo clown Bob Romer rushed in, drew the bull’s attention and gave Thomsen time to escape without injury.

The newspaper’s original caption said it best: “Don’t point that thing at me!”

In 1969, NASA imagined that the reusable Space Shuttle might look like this—and hoped it would make its first flight by 1976.

The design changed dramatically, and the first operational shuttle did not reach orbit until 1981. This original newspaper photograph preserves a fascinating glimpse of the future as people once imagined it.
