Scott Grothe Photography My hope for you in viewing my images is that you enjoy seeing them as much as I enjoyed capturing them.

While I am honored when people want to hang a print of mine on their wall, it was not my main reason for creating this website.

This post is a bit different. Once in a while, I'm asked to do a photo shoot for a local business. I enjoy such shoots. They tend to "stretch" my photographic abilities and I usually learn something new that I can incorporate into my wildlife & nature photography. This shoot was no exception.

A Treasure Valley developer asked if I would be interested in photographing about 2,600 grazing domestic sheep on land around one of their developing properties. They were wanting such shots to depict a country living "flavor" for this particular property to be used in their promotional, marketing, advertising and social media materials. The shoot sounded interesting and challenging, as well. So, I said yes.

My goal was to photograph the sheep, rolling hills and open spaces along with newly built homes all in single photographs. Oh, and throw in a few cute lamb shots too. So, after several days of scouting and shooting, the developer liked what I delivered. I definitely enjoyed the work and the folks I worked with, including the developer's content strategist, the sheepherders, as well as the herding and sheep protection dogs.

Hope you enjoy a few shots of a little different "flavor". AND, Happy Mother's Day to all the mom's out there!

Well, it's been a few months since I've posted anything. Deb & I have been "nursing" her broken foot (screws & plate required) since the first week of January. So, I haven't strayed too far from home for very long. She's well on the mend now, bearing weight on it and getting more agile every day. The few times I got out this winter looking for my favorite owls were a bust. Evidently, the extremely mild winter here didn't instill a great need to migrate to lower altitudes like most years.

I did get out last week north of Boise looking for Bald Eagles. I did find one of those on a nest, but got distracted by several Sandhill Cranes and Red-winged Blackbirds. The lack of a few clouds made for some harsh light, but I was happy to be out with the camera gear and a buddy. Yeah, we might get some snow yet, but I'd say Spring is here. After all, I'm already mowing and pulling dandelions.

Hope you all enjoy the shots!

I went looking for Great Grey and Barred Owls a few days ago. I didn't come across any, but it's a bit early to see them where I was looking. However, I did spend some time watching about a dozen Cedar Waxwings feeding on some crabapples. It didn't take long for two or three of them to finish a crabapple.

Hope this posts finds you excited for your holiday get-togethers with family and friends. Safe travels everyone and Happy Holidays!

Enjoy!

Took the camera gear out last week to try and photograph some River Otters that were recently spotted north of Boise. The otters were nowhere to be found. However, I did set up near a partially eaten Canada Goose carcass that a female Northern Harrier was hanging around. Spent seven hours near the carcass while frequently checking the local waters for the otters. I must say, what I expect to see and shoot with the camera in hand on my southwest Idaho outings isn't what I typically end up shooting. Still hoping for some time with otters someday, but I was definitely happy with the harrier shots.

Enjoy, AND have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!

Ah, hummingbirds. Pretty iridescent colors, numerous species, tiny quick fliers, tough to photograph.

Deb has had hummingbird feeders in our backyard for a few years now. I've tried photographing them from time to time with marginal success. However, persistence pays off, as they say. I also had some comfy patio furniture and a cool beverage nearby to keep me engaged for several hours this past Summer.

These shots made it to my www.scottgrothephotography.com website in the Fine Art category since I shot and processed them using high-key techniques (light background often with a dark or silhouetted subject). In this instance, I was able to keep the bird's colors fairly close to its actual colors in the processing work. I believe the bird is a female Black-chinned Hummingbird. Let me know if you think otherwise.

Enjoy!

Deb & I were able to visit some friends in Alaska a few weeks ago. And yes, I brought close to 50 lbs. of camera gear along. I devoted five days to photography where we rented a car and got up to Denali, the metropolis of Talkeetna, Hatcher Pass north of Wasilla and a few natural areas along the Turnagain Arm and Cook Inlet. I shot some northern lights, but honestly, Deb spent much more time chasing the aurora borealis than I did and her shots were much much better than mine. We had a variety of weather and light. Everything from rainy for dramatic moose shots to nearly clear skies to see and shoot Denali...somewhat of a rarity. I specifically looked for bears, Dall Sheep and Mountain Goats. The only bear I saw was the hind end of a Black Bear quickly leaving a parking lot near Denali. Never saw any sheep or goats. Did see a few Beluga Whales, but too briefly to photograph. Moose were rutting and the bull in the images was "on the hunt". He even walked in on me a couple of times to about 25 yds. I wasn't sure if he thought I was a "friend or foe", but I convinced him I was neither, and was happy for that.

Enjoy.

Earlier this month, Deb & I camped for five days with some friends near Stanley Lake on the north end of the Sawtooth Mountains here in Idaho. I brought the camera gear and my canoe to feed my yearning to paddle this mountain lake and hopefully get a stealthy approach to some wildlife photo ops along the shoreline. I love paddling the canoe and I wanted to "scratch that itch".

I shot dancing and nesting Sandhill Cranes, wading Spotted Sandpipers, and cruising Common Mergansers. I got a couple of nice landscape pics too...the bow of the canoe pic was shot with the phone. The weather was a bit unsettled with frequent snow and rain squalls coming through most everyday. However, the winds were usually light or none existent, which made for some great sneaky quiet paddling over three different days on the water. Enjoy!

A bit of trivia about Stanley Lake - As some of you may know, in March of 2020 a nearby 6.5 magnitude earthquake liquified sediments at the inlet area of the lake which submerged a campground under a few feet of water. That campground has since been closed, but you can still see remnants of it as you paddle and hike around the area.

Lastly, my prior post on a photo shoot up at my friends, the Kochs, was posted on my personal FB page at www.facebook.com/scott.grothe.2025 . I probably should have put that post on my photography FB page...oops.

We finally got some snow in the lower elevations out here so I took the camera gear for a walk looking for owls again last week. I didn't get any flight shots, which is what I'm really after at this point. However, I did happen to get a shot of this Barred Owl mid blink. Looking at the image on the computer at home, it reminded me of those old Tootsie Pop TV commercials with Mr. Owl. You can see the protective blue nictitating membrane many raptors have in this image. Thought I'd share it.

And, if you tried to get into my www.scottgrothephotography.com website in the last week, you probably had some difficulty. I was creating some new categories and refining a few things. The rebuild is now complete.

Hope your day is going well!

Been shooting owls with the camera for several weeks now. Wish we had some snow to enhance the images, but no luck down low in southwest Idaho yet this winter. However, I've gotten a few keepers of both Barred (black eyes) and Great Grey Owls (yellow eyes).

Enjoy.

I found a pair of mink on the Boise River in Eagle, ID a few weeks back. Lack of snow at this elevation certainly doesn't spruce up the drab colors this time of year. Hopefully, we'll get some snow down low to brighten things up. I'll look in on the pair from time to time. After all, I can't get any shots if I'm not out there. Enjoy.
