Soft moments on the North Shore

At the beginning of 2023, I didn’t know what I was doing with my life anymore. I’d worked hard as a bartender but it just wasn’t making me happy. I spent most of my twenties chasing a passion that led to a dead end for me. It was a brutal feeling and this trip to Oahu was a good moment to recenter. As I watched the sun sink further and further into the cloud bank this extraordinary explosion of color turned the once quiet blue sky into this rainbow of fuchsia, orange and reds. The colors sent everyone on the beach into a frenzy! We all looked at each other in a ‘can you believe this?!’ kinda way. Phones were pulled out quickly to capture the moment. I pulled out my camera but I thought, ‘who is enjoying this moment?’ I wanted to capture the people who were reveling and my eye immediately went to those two embracing. I don’t know why, but I think just watching them bask in that dying light reminded me of my sister. These small, precious moments, so fleeting yet somehow make life worth living.

Every morning I’d get up and immediately listen to the news broadcasts I’d missed the day before as I did chores. I just always felt like this flow wasn’t quite right for me and instead of doing chores I switched to working on photography things.

But that wasn’t the problem, it was actually the news and the scrolling around on YouTube for more news that was ruining my flow.

It felt like so much of my attention was redirected towards something that wasn’t helping me achieve my goals. While I believe that being an informed citizen and getting your news from a couple different outlets is your duty, it doesn’t have to be a proverbial waterfall of consumption. Listen when you can, listen to lots of different opinions, listen to real experts but do it in a structured way that doesn’t feel like you’re losing your life to the onslaught of information.

There’s so much life to be living and it’s not worth feeling powerless all the time.

As I’ve gotten back to social media I notice that I check my phone way more and inevitably end up spending way longer on the apps than I mean to. It’s frustrating to feel like these apps and their approval govern my business to such a high degree.

The truth is, it would be nice to have all the mile markers of success on these platforms but I have a hard time truly caring about that stuff. I’d rather be meeting y’all face-to-face at some of these festivals and art shows! Of which I’ve made the goal to be apart during the winter season. I’ll keep y’all posted on which events I’ll be in.

Being online is so weird. I spend a good portion of my week researching best practices so that the time I do spend online is quick and efficient and helps me get back to what I love doing.

But lately I’ve seen information that instagram is pushing creators to post something to their feed every day, post at least 3-4 reels every week, and post to their stories at least 5 times a day. This is so the algorithm will pick them and add their content to people’s FYP.

I have no desire to work for instagram’s algorithm to that degree. I’d rather be outside honing my craft then grinding away for a couple extra followers.

I’m naturally an anxious person. It’s generally hard for me to sit down and enjoy moments like this when I feel like I’ve always got to keep an eye open for danger, real or imagined. But the world is so full of beautiful, wonderful places and people, I think it would make me more upset if I lived a life that didn’t get to experience it.
