Looks like this'll be Banks Lake week! I know I could share them all in one post, but there's something I prefer about showcasing one image at a time. Maybe impractical, but being practical can be overrated anyways.

In hindsight I'd have stepped back to get the full reflection of these cypress. I think maybe this was the only distance I could avoid the boardwalk in the frame though. I really need to get in here with a pair of waders to get certain shots... Maybe in the winter. 🙃🐊

It's likely I'll take hundreds, if not thousands of pictures here in my lifetime. This is Banks Lake in Lakeland, Georgia. I can't help myself every time I stop. There's always something different in the lighting, colors, and reflections. Nature's moods fluctuate rapidly, much like ours.

I've not yet captured the image that I think demonstrates just how stunning this place is. It's possible I never will. But I'll keep trying.

I look around at what's left of the natural world and I can't fathom how some "people" seek to destroy it.

My eyes become misty at the sight of a wildflower, knowing some only see it as a w**d. My heart sinks while standing among a cypress grove, knowing developers view it as wasted space.

We are the wildflower and we are the cypress. No matter how hard we try to convince ourselves otherwise. You and I are as much part of the natural world as poison ivy.

Robin Wall Kimmerer says in Braiding Sweetgrass - "What happens to one happens to us all. We can starve together or feast together. All flourishing is mutual".

When we destroy our planet we destroy ourselves. Both in body and in spirit.

Wondering and wandering are much the same. Wondering is simply the wandering of the mind. The two become indistinguishable on a walk in the woods!

When I'm looking to share an image, I browse through film scans until something compels me to stop on a certain photo. There's this spark in my mind that I'm searching for - the beginnings of a musing I wish to share.

If that spark doesn't light a fire fairly quickly, I move on. In today's instance, not much of anything was giving me that inspiration. I attribute that mostly to running late for my morning coffee.

But this image stopped me. Not because I loved it. Honestly, because I thought it was pretty bad. However, there were these little bits of potential in it. I thought "I'd like to try to take a similar photo again, maybe with a different camera and film stock". I was trying to capture this rainbow effect that tends to happen in the Fall here in the Southeast. It's due to oils leeching out from Cypress. When the lighting hits just right, it expresses an array of color over some swampy areas. I'm unsure why I only seem to notice this in the cooler months.

Anyways, I wandered in this image for a bit and got lost in the reflections in the still water. Then the thought creeped in... "but what if I turned it upside down?!". Then came the feeling I was searching for! Somehow, turning this photo upside down gave me a new love for it. Whether it's a "good" photo now is questionable, but for me personally, it gave the scene new life.

Moral of the story? Maybe it's time we do more handstands in the outdoors. Ha!

Also, I just spilled my coffee.

Summertime stillness is settling in.

The kind that inspires cicadas to sing.

The quiet that only comes between the scattered storms.
Yet somehow, crashes louder than thunder.

It made its presence known with a towering pine pressed firmly against a dark gray sky. Completely stagnant.

Like a flower pressed in my favorite book.

Summertime stillness is settling in.

The edge of Florida's Forgotten Coast is like a warm welcome into an alternate world. A doorway of mud, limestone, mangrove, and palm opens up into the marshland bordering the mighty and ancient Gulf of Mexico.

Miles of open skyline, unobscured by those vile towers that poison most other Florida seasides. Here you can gaze outward and for a moment forget the rampant development and destruction happening behind your back.

I pray this place remains untouched and sacred. That would be true progress.
