Scenes of Maine Photography

Scenes of Maine Photography www.scenesofmaine.com Hi, my name is Stephen Beckwith and welcome to my Facebook photography page.

Dusk and dawn have always been my two favorite times of the day. Being out in Mother Nature during that transition of light from day to night can be absolutely stunning to say the least. Living in Maine, the opportunity for that next beautiful scene seems to always be right around the next corner! Of course, some of my corners mean hiking up a mountain trail by flashlight at 4:00am, or being soake

d head to toe by an ocean wave, but hey, those fleeting moments are just too amazing to let get away!

Milky Way over The Depot Train Station in Crawford Notch, NH
Had a blast shooting with , one of my students from a recent class who is also a long time friend of my wife's from "back in the teaching days." We spent a couple hours on the tracks fiddling with our cameras and it was great fun had by all!
An image like this is hardly ever a point and click....so here are the details for the curious.
Sky: 15 images each at 10sec, ISO12800, f2.8 stacked into one to reduce noise.
Foreground: 1 image at 60sec, ISO1600, f2.8. Indirect head lamp above building to lighten the foreground.
Head Lamp: 1 image at 30sec, ISO1600, f2.8
Did not move the camera, tripod, or focus for the entire series.
All images blended together and processed using Lightroom, Starry Landscape Stacker, and Photoshop.

Another fine night under the stars with Dean from . We met up in Phippsburg at Morse Mountain, and had a wonderful night-hike over the hills and through the woods and came upon this scene at the beach.
We spent three hours walking and exploring and shooting, and sometimes talking.
It was great fun had by all!

Hung out with my buddy Dean from at Monday morning for some night sky fun. There were sprites of bioluminescence riding the rapids under the bridge, a frosty chill hanging in the air, and a sky full of stars and nebulae and a big dark horse! It was great fun had by all. :)

I went for the stars, and stayed for the sun. Not often does a "just enough" clear night sky for the Milky Way turn into "plenty enough" clouds for dawn, but that was just the case on Tuesday morning at Portland Head Light! The crescent moon even made an appearance.

Instagram catch-up image 36 of 100. When we arrived at the top of Hunts Mesa in Monument Valley to shoot the Milky Way, it was already dusk and we got busy setting up camp (though most of it was already set up by our Navajo guides) and busted out our tripods and camera's and went about our business of capturing the Milky Way. The next morning, we woke up to this sight in our backyard. Quite amazing!

When the alarm goes off at midnight and I am in my truck by 12:23am with a full thermos of coffee, a pile of warm clothes, and my camera bag, it can only mean one thing: Milky Way season is here Baby! I spent the winter trying to improve my night sky processing and blending skills and here is the result. Pemaquid Lighthouse was as beautiful as ever this morning, here is what it looked like under the stars.

Check out this amazing image created by Justin Miller from JM NatureScapes. The Double Arch Milky Way can only be captured for about a week out of the entire year. During the new moon cycle in March, you can capture the winter Milky Way shortly after sunset, then capture the summer Milky Way shortly before sunrise, then combine a long nights work into one 360 degree pano! An amazing achievement of mental skill and physical stamina, bravo my friend!

Instagram catch-up image 36 of 100. When my wife and I went to Iceland last October to celebrate our 20th Anniversary, Diamond Beach was certainly on our list of "must see" places. And it did not disappoint! What amazed me the most, besides the site of broken off glacier pieces washing up to a mostly black beach, was how much it changed from day to day. Because of where we were staying (two different places, over the course of three days), we actually visited this beach on three consecutive mornings and I was simple amazed (AMAZED!) at how different it looked from day to day. The first morning I was a little like, ho-hum kinda cool, but not THAT cool. Then the next morning, it got much cooler with a lot more ice chunks washed up on shore. Then the third morning was like HOLY COW, now I see what the fuss is all about. This image was taken from that morning. The strikingly blue iceberg chunks mixed in with the amazingly crystal clear smoothed-over smaller pieces was astounding!
