The LARGEST Tornado in History!

El Reno, Oklahoma 5/31/2013

It’s been 13 years since that fateful day. What transpired was a tragic day for many, including the chasing community. A volatile atmosphere was in place and strong tornadoes were possible, but no one imagined this monster!

The El Reno tornado started off as dancing, strong vortices before becoming a massive, quickly expanding wedge tornado. The NWS survey revealed a maximum width of 2.6 miles, making it the largest tornado in recorded history.

Sadly this tornado killed several people along its path, including 4 Storm chasers that couldn’t outrun it.

Three of the chasers tragically killed were the Twistex Team. Everyone who knew Tim Samaras would describe him as a genius but also as being safety minded. The Twistex Team being overtaken and killed goes to show how dangerous this, and every tornado, can be.

Mike Bettis of the Weather Channel was also out chasing and his vehicle rolled into the field by the tornado. It’s a miracle he and his team survived.

As a chaser, one can only imagine how much worse this day would likely be if it occurred in 2026, given the large increase in chasers and traffic. While I pray something like this never happens again, I fear that it’s just a matter of time. Escape routes and situational awareness are crucial.

🚨 SEVERE WEATHER THREAT SATURDAY 🚨

Severe weather is in the forecast Saturday afternoon and evening. The main threats are large hail and damaging winds, but a few tornadoes are possible as well.

There are three main threat areas: (1) Northeast CO/SW Nebraska - wind shear is best here and a number of storms are likely but moisture is a little lacking (2) Central Kansas - Instability is highest but wind shear is pretty limited and will result in messy storms (3) SW Oklahoma/NW Texas - temps will be near 100° and storms will be high based, hail and wind the big threat.

As you can see in the map below of CAPE (instability), the atmosphere is primed for severe weather on Saturday.

May 27th, 1997

29 years ago today one of the strongest, most violent tornadoes struck central Texas near the town of Jarrell. This iconic “dead man walking” image is known by many. This tornado created some of the most intense damage ever seen due to its strength but also due to its slow speed. Anything in its path, from trees to houses to even people, either completely disappeared or was ground into unrecognizable pieces.

Very fun radar over the eastern side of DFW Wednesday as an MCV (mesoscale convective vortex) has formed from last night’s storms and spins like a hurricane.

🚨 Storm Season Returning? 🚨

As we look ahead to June, the first week looks quiet, too quiet, but it looks like that may change going into the second week of June! 👀

As we move from May into June, the jet stream and severe weather tends to start to migrate north. It doesn’t means storms won’t happen in the southern plains, but it gets more active in the central and northern plains.

The CFS supercell composite shown below is lighting up on areas in the central and northern plains by the second week of June. This calm period won’t last forever!

Buckle up!⛈️🌪️

🚨 STORMY TUESDAY IN TEXAS 🚨

Tuesday looks like it will be quite stormy across much of Texas. Storms appear likely to form by about midday in west Texas and the panhandle and push east throughout the day.

Shown below is the HRRR model for 6pm with a bowing line of storms moving across the Hill Country. The main threats tomorrow will be some hail and damaging winds, but a few tornadoes ant be ruled out, especially earlier on.

Storms will push across the I-35 corridor in the evening!

6 years ago today I witnessed my first tornado near Burkburnett, TX on 5/22/2020.

And as they say, “the rest is history!” The next tornado I see will be number 100.🌪️
