As soon as I could I started taking high school courses, then went on to study photojournalism at Indiana University under my mentor Steve Raymer. Raymer, a National Geographic staff photographer who served as director of the National Geographic Society News Service in Washington, D.C. from 1989 to 1995, taught me to catch people when they were not looking and to tell a story using photographs. He always emphasized that one image can make change in a persons life or create change for the greater good, that not all photos need to be beautiful but raw and real. His little red pen marking up my photo assignments really made me push myself to be better and to keep learning. After college I thought I would dive into a photojournalism career but was derailed by family responsibilities after my father passed away. I took another career route in public health while still shooting on week-ends and after my 9 to 5 job. Never giving up on my love for photography I now have over 20 yrs in portrait work, over 15 yrs shooting weddings, and I have been published in various media mediums. My goal is to keep pushing my art and skill set because I really love being behind the camera.
