Finding a “rut pit” was absolutely incredible to watch. This bull dug his pit and started peeing in it, and three cows came out of no where from the woods to wallow in his pit, push each other away, rub up against the bull and compete for his attention. At one point throughout the day, there were as many as 6 cows lingering around and a couple other bulls coming around trying to take some cows.

Since moose don’t have the best eye sight, they use their incredible ability to smell and hear their surroundings and can smell about 200 times better than a human can. This bull moose took in a big whiff of air and knew of my presence even from a good distance away and not being very visible.
