Alaska is a beautiful place. Full of some of the world’s boldest and most vast landscape. Opportunities for fishing, hunting and exploring abound. It’s also the setting for a documentary my friends Ryan Welch, and Ryan Rossman had the chance to be a part of, called Alaskan Nets.
The film captures the story of a small town, Metlakatla - the only Native Reserve in Alaska - which has fallen on difficult times in the last decade. The saw mill is no longer there and fishing has been hit hard by climate change.
The town’s one “escape” is the game of basketball.
Alaskan Nets follows the high school boys basketball team – with the hopes and dreams of a small town riding on their shoulders – in their quest to bring home the first state championship in decades.
