There's something awkward about senior year. You're older than everyone else...you're part-adult, part-child...you're figuring out who you are and what you like. But, conversely, there's something amazing about senior year. You're older than everyone else! You're part-adult, but still part-child! You're figuring out who you are and what you like!

What's special is when you find someone who can be mature and goofy and sweet and unsure and confident all at once. Who can do the whole "senior thing" with grace and make everything awkward suddenly seem wonderful.

My baby sister turns fourteen tomorrow and I can't help but feel a little overwhelmed by her grownup-ness. This summer, she played "Mary' in a theater production of "Pride and Prejudice", and I saw her in a new light. Sassy, independent, and introverted, yes. But also strong, womanly, and funny. Seeing her on that stage made me open my eyes and see her in real life. She's not a little kid anymore. She's (almost) fourteen and she's a firecracker of a young woman if there ever was one.
