As a photographer, so much of my work is about capturing moments and freezing them in time. Most of the time, that means engagements, weddings, milestones and all the joyful moments we want to hold onto forever. But sometimes, it means documenting a different kind of love story.
When my close friend knew his senior pup, Beamer, was nearing the end of his journey, he asked me to photograph their family together before that time came.
These sessions are incredibly emotional. Our dogs become such an important part of our lives, and saying goodbye is never easy. But there's also something special about preserving the little things... the way they look at you, the quirks that make them who they are, the way they lean into you, their favorite spots and all the tiny details you never want to forget.
Beamer was adopted as an adult and, when he joined the Schreiber family, he finally learned what it meant to be truly loved. From then on, he was the sweetest boy, known for his big personality, his love of barking and, most importantly, the love he gave so freely to his family.
Beamer has since crossed the rainbow bridge, but these pictures serve as a reminder of just how much love can be packed into a lifetime together. And I think that's one of the greatest gifts photography can give us: a way to hold onto the pieces of someone we love, even after they're gone.
