Those of you that have heard me speak or have talked to me personally about EHD and what can be done, you have heard me use the phrase holistic biology. I had a good talk yesterday with Zach at EHD-fense and we talked about his product. We had a very good heart to heart, biologist to biologist talk. If you talk with Zach and LISTEN to him you understand where he is coming from. This product does not kill the midge. This product makes water healthier by encouraging a diverse aquatic system. Water critters that need a healthy system that eat the midge larvae. Treating ponds to make a clean environment, his product helps to build the health of the water. It’s a very holistic approach. I have been preaching that if you are in an area that is affected by EHD now is the time to do some common sense approach to build your herd back.
1.) Don’t hunt this year, you need to build herd immunity as the does and fawns that are left propagate and pass immunity on to the next generation
2.) Time to switch from corn if supplemental feeding to a good all around food.
3.) Provide water on midslope and ridges to keep deer out of the low swamps and muddy drainages during drought and late summer.
4.) Minimize midge areas. Drain muddy roads, drain manmade swampy muddy areas. Gravel atv creek crossings and just use common sense water management
5.) start a good mineral program
