Our time in Rocky Mountain National Park brought us sightings of three moose (a young bull, a cow & calf), lots of elk getting ready for the rut and the usual deer & little critters!

For the last few days we have been exploring the Black Hills of South Dakota with visits to Custer State Park, Wind Cave National Park, Mount Rushmore and several scenic drives including Needles Highway. Liz insisted on spending a lot of time watching the many prairie dogs!

Bison, feral horses, prairie dogs, deer, the sounds of elk calling and lots of birds of prey provided our entertainment during our few days in a scorching hot Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

Before we left Glacier National Park we took one last drive down to Fishercap Lake - the rain had stopped and the sun was trying to break through the cloud. There were plenty of photographers waiting for the moose but they hadn’t shown up yet. So we drove back down the road and stopped near the Many Glacier Hotel to watch some bighorn sheep come down the side of the mountain onto the road and then continued our drive towards the park exit. These activities all contributed to us being in the right place at the right time to see a bear pop out of the damp undergrowth at the side of the road. It momentarily looked into my camera lens and then ran along side of us, my camera wasn’t switch on *smacks forehead*. I captured three blurred images as it started to run for cover. Then it smelt some tasty berries, suddenly stopped and was quite comfortable standing by the side of us eating until a few cars arrived behind us. Very happy we said goodbye to the bear and Glacier National Park and drove on to Waterton Lakes.

Our drive along Glacier National Park’s Going-to-the-Sun Road was more like Going-to-the-Cloud Road, but hey, we had perfect weather for our last visit and probably used all of our GNP weather luck up then! Fortunately, moose aren’t bothered by rain and we got to spend time watching this bull moose and his much shyer lady.

We watched the bighorn sheep near Many Glacier Hotel - they were much lower on the slope than on our last visit - funny moment when a group of people were so intent on watching the sheep on the slope above them through their binoculars they didn’t see one of the sheep jogging along the road in front of them (until we advised them to put down their binos, lol).

Next onwards to Waterton Lakes.

Our three days in Yellowstone National Park rewarded us with great bear sightings! We enjoyed our drive along the Beartooth Highway, the cloud stopped us from seeing the bear’s tooth (mountain shaped like a tooth) this time, but we did see a pika. And there was the usual bison, elk, mule deer, coyote, dot wolves and more... sightings around Yellowstone.

Our time in Grand Teton National Park is coming to an end and tomorrow we move on to Yellowstone National Park. Highlights from the last few days include seeing a moose & her calf along Moose-Wilson Road (first time here in nearly 20 years!), the beautiful blue skies (but not the ridiculous heat!) and the wonderful reflections at Phelps Lake.

Day 3 ended with our arrival into Grand Teton National Park where the wildlife greeted us at Jackson Lake.
