copper + pine studio the woods. the lakes. the skies. the soul. the U.P. Some moments are meant to be held without a lens. Some you want to hold forever.

What began as a challenge to myself to capture moments with a lens as I see them without has turned into copper + pine studio. Equipment (so far):

Tonight across most of the United States, the skies will be among some of the clearest all year. The new moon (in Cancer♋, if that's your vibe) will make the Milky Way clearly visible.

Not sure where or when to look? One of my favorite beginner apps is Sky Tonight which features an augmented reality overlay using your phone's camera as well as being able to adjust the date and time so you can pinpoint where your favorite star or constellation will appear in your sky.

💜🌲Located just outside of Bark River in the Upper Peninsula, the narrow country roads open up almost dramatically to reveal what is obviously a labor of love. Tucked up against the woods and fields are the neat and fragrant rows of flowers that lend Purple Lavender Farm its name...

A "U-Pick" event on Facebook immediately caught my attention and I knew making the drive out there would be worth it. These are the kinds of moments that remind you to always listen to your inner voice.

So, make the drive.

It's more than bold sunsets and sandstone cliffs or roaring waterfalls. It's more than 100 year old pines and rocky outcrops. It's in the shadows of the forests and the light on the icy shores.

Finally... Not just for finally getting the right time and right conditions to see them, but finally for spring! My usual viewing locations in the area were still buried under snow so I made do with an overly bright side road. They were naked-eye visible in hazy white pillars and arcs, almost overhead.

I'll never not be in wonder at the sky at night 💖
