Sometimes a destination is simply too interesting to pass up. We traveled to Rugby, North Dakota, to visit the Geographical Center of North America monument and, of course, get the photo. With the flags of the United States, Canada, and Mexico flying nearby, the scene made for a memorable stop and a classic roadside landmark image.

The North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park surprised me with its mix of rugged Badlands formations and quiet stretches of prairie. Photographed in August, this scene drew me in with its layered hills rising beyond grasses, sage, and yellow wildflowers under a wide North Dakota sky. This female Red-winged Blackbird paused among the leafy branches at the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center near the boardwalk, allowing me to capture her intricate markings and natural camouflage within the lush coastal surroundings.
