An Invitation Into the Unknown

We have a couple of genealogy diehards in my family, and I love reading the things they find. My ancestors were mostly Scottish and Welsh, with some Irish and Nordic (I claim my Viking roots wholeheartedly. 🤣) mixed in. One thing I find really intriguing is the traditions they brought with them to America, especially herbal remedies, art, and folklore.

That is what led me to the Daisy Wheel. The traditional Daisy Wheel is an ancient six-petaled design, also called a hexafoil, usually made by drawing overlapping circles with a compass. Daisy Wheels have been found carved into churches, barns, fireplaces, doorways, furniture, and gravestones all across Europe. Many are hundreds of years old, and the design itself goes back much further.

No one knows for certain what every Daisy Wheel meant. Some may have simply been decoration or a way for craftsmen to practice geometry. But many were placed near doors, windows, and fireplaces because people believed they offered protection from evil, bad luck, and anything else that might come creeping through an opening. The design and other European traditions were later carried into the Appalachian Mountains and other parts of early America. I don’t know whether my version will trap any evil spirits, but it is made from old dishes, broken glass, and a little bit of family history. That feels pretty fitting to me.
