After a long hiatus, I've got a new photo to post. This one is from 5 years ago. I really love the color of these Ponderosa Pine trees in the park when contrasted with the snow.

Lake Superior sure creates some interesting scenes along its shore. The sun didn't make an appearance on this morning so I just had to go with the gloomy feeling.

Surprisingly enough, this past weekend was the first time I've been up to the North Shore of Minnesota to take photos during the winter season. On this day, it had been cloudy all day except about a couple hours before sunset when the sun finally made an appearance. I made my way to Tettegouche State Park and captured some great golden hour light on Shovel Point. I really love the ice formations on the rocks in the foreground.

During my trip to Rocky Mountain National Park last month, there was a location on Deer Mountain that I wanted to check out. Deer Mountain is mostly covered with trees but there is a clearing on the northern side that can be seen from the road. I've always wanted to see how the view looks from that spot. Since I wasn't quite sure how long of a hike and how much snow I'd have to slog through, I kept my heavy camera gear in the car. My intent was to come back with my camera later in the evening for sunset if it turned out to be a good location. My heavy breathing at altitude was lessened without my pack for which I was grateful. As I was making my way, I came across a young pine tree beautifully spotlighted by the low angle of the afternoon sun. Well, that's a bummer, I thought. Wish I had my camera. On I went and arrived at my destination. It actually didn't turn out to be that long of a hike, made much faster by carrying less weight. I enjoyed the view and headed back, wondering if the tree would still be touched by that beautiful light. Alas, it was not. But I wanted to find more of them. I got back to my car, grabbed my camera and headed out to find more isolated young pines making their way in the world. I eventually found this one pictured here. Just as well lit as the original tree that inspired me.

On the second day of my Rocky Mountain National Park trip, I scouted out a location for the sunrise the next morning. It was a view facing west with the Fall River in the foreground and mountains in the background. But when I stepped out of my hotel room the next morning, I knew my plans would change. The clouds above me were in the east and just starting to change color. I could already tell this was going to be an epic sunrise. When I arrived at the river, I quickly found a composition on the river facing east. One of the best sunrises I've experienced in the Park.

After a long hiatus, I'm back in Colorado to take some photos. This morning, the clouds hung around the mountain peaks in Rocky Mountain National Park and put on a nice little light show. This is Hallett Peak and Flattop Mountain in the background.

Trying to outrace the sunrise. Off to Colorado for some photography.

Alas, this Minnesota sea stack on Lake Superior is no longer standing after this weekend’s winter storm. It was one of the iconic locations along the North Shore. It will be missed.
