When you travel a lot, which I do for work, you see a lot of interesting things. We stopped at two towns that died during the Great Depression and ended up as ghost towns when the interstate system was built.
The church with the tall bell tower is Saint John's Lutheran Church. It was built in the early 1920s. The church sat atop a small basement with cinder block walls. The block collapsed, leaving the church to stand on the support beams for the floor joists. The harsh winters and prairie winds caused the beams near the door to collapse, and now the church sits with the front entrance collapsed into the basement. The yellow house was a home for someone until 1983. They're all that remains of the small rural North Dakota town of Arena.
The brick school and small church are a part of Crystal Springs, North Dakota, a once hopping community that was split literally in half when the interstate was laid down right through the middle of the town. The school was used for primary grades for the first 5 years it was open, then opened to upper grades for 7 years before the school closed in its entirety when the interstate was laid down.

Appomattox Court House. Virginia

Known as the "SAM Two-Six-Thousand", this Boeing VC-137C aircraft played a special role in history. It was boarded by Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Clinton, whereupon the call sign would change to "Air Force One" while any president was on board.
It was the plane where Lyndon B. Johnson took his oath of office on November 22, 1963, just hours after Kennedy was assassinated. It was the plane that later took Kennedy's body, accompanied by newly sworn in Johnson, back to Washington, D.C. from Texas. It was the plane Nixon took to China, making him the first US President to ever go there, and then later to the Soviet Union where he signed two nuclear arms control agreements. It was the plane Queen Elizabeth II used when she visited the US in 1983.
After 36 years of service and over 13,000 hours of flight time, SAM 26000 was retired to the National Museum of the United States Air Force in 1998, where it still is today, and where I had the honor of taking this picture when I visited the museum about a month ago.
