The CPKC Holiday Train comes through Detroit on the evening of Sunday, Nov. 22, lit up on its way from Windsor to Chicago. It won’t stop for a show anywhere in Michigan, so seeing it takes a little planning.

It plays Windsor from 5 to 5:30 p.m., then comes under the river into Southwest Detroit. CPKC doesn’t post times for Michigan, so be in place by about 6 p.m. Last year it paused near Michigan Central for about 40 minutes, the Detroit Free Press reported. Downriver, crowds have gathered at the lot next to Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park.

Watching is free. Stay at least 50 feet back from the tracks, and follow the train live on CPKC’s Holiday Train page.

Detroit just handed out its first Make Detroit Home grants. Thirteen Detroiters are each getting $15,000 to buy or fix up a home or grow a business in the city.

The program drew more than 6,500 applications from across the country. Another 300 grants of $1,000 each are planned for current and future Detroiters, for down payments, home repairs, rent, moving costs or business projects.

Motz’s Burgers has been making sliders in Detroit since 1929, and you can now get them at three Metro Detroit locations.

It started on West Fort Street, where a small ball of fresh beef gets pressed onto the flat top over a pile of sliced onions, then topped with American cheese, pickles, ketchup and mustard on a soft bun. That original counter is still open, and the family has since added Redford Township in 2023 and Southgate this spring.

A hamburger is $2.85. A cheeseburger is $3.10. This year, Metro Times readers voted it the best burger in Detroit.

One hundred years ago this month, Harry Houdini gave his last performance in downtown Detroit.

On Oct. 24, 1926, he took the stage at the Garrick Theatre on Griswold Street with a 104-degree fever and finished the show. A week later, on Halloween, he died at Grace Hospital. Whether a dressing-room punch in Montreal two days earlier played a role is still debated.

Detroit’s People Mover is getting 12 refurbished trains from Toronto. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced a $10 million state grant Oct. 13 to replace the system’s nine aging cars with cars from Toronto’s Scarborough RT, which closed in 2023.

The Scarborough line ran on the same type of motor as the People Mover, so its cars fit the Detroit system. The grant pays to inspect, rebuild and certify them.

No date has been set for the first refurbished car to carry riders.

Shredder Ski School in Livonia teaches kids as young as 1 to ski and snowboard on an indoor slope, so lessons run every week no matter what the weather is doing.

The 10-week Holiday Session runs Oct. 19 through Jan. 17. Classes are grouped by age: Yeti School for ages 1 to 3 with a parent, Little Shredders for ages 3 to 5, and Ski & Board School for ages 5 to 10. Each class is 40 minutes a week, all gear is included, and it’s $38 a week or $380 for the session. Private lessons for all ages are $85.

Detroit's Guardian Building opened on April 2, 1929. Seven months later, the stock market crashed.

It was built as a 40-story bank tower for the Union Trust Company, wrapped in about 1.8 million custom orange bricks, with a lobby ceiling of Pewabic and Rookwood tile, marble from an African quarry reopened just for the job, and a Tiffany glass clock in the banking hall. Detroiters called it the Cathedral of Finance.

The bank didn't survive the Depression. The building did, and you can still walk into the lobby at 500 Griswold.

The Hive on Russell opened Oct. 2 with 78 affordable apartments at Russell and Gratiot, between Eastern Market and Lafayette Park. Develop Detroit built the $23.9 million building on a lot that had sat vacant for years.

Every unit is for households earning 30% to 60% of the area median income, roughly $33,000 to $63,000 a year.

Applications are available Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the temporary leasing office at 269 Winder St., or online at thehivedetroit.com.
