The thing I love most about Colorado is that you can drive into the mountains and just find a random alpine lake to hike to and then jump into.

9 easy miles, a good workout and a refreshing break at the top. A perfect summer day ☀️

30 14ers for 30 years! We hiked Mount Antero as my 30th peak in Colorado bringing me to 30/58. It was smoky throughout the holiday weekend so thankfully we were able to off-road most of it. Then it was time to find clearer skies in Crested Butte and go get my favorite elk steak dinner in town 🫎 So excited to spend the next few weeks here!!

Now that my euro posts have concluded (RIP), here are some Colorado things from back in May that I didn’t have time to post.

📍Rifle Gap State Park

The western slopes are so underrated and visiting this state park made me feel like I wasn’t even in Colorado anymore. Waterfalls, foxes, lots of greenery. And still some snow on the mountains 🥲

Reading by the river vs rafting on the river 📖🏞️

I saw something about whitewater rafting back when this trip was still just a plan, and with Colorado deep in drought, I knew we’d have to find it somewhere else. I didn’t expect that somewhere to be the Tara River Canyon, the deepest canyon in Europe, or that it would be my first time whitewater rafting ever.

The water was freezing. We jumped in anyway, more than once, because when else would we get the chance. The rafting company had a property right on the river, dorm-style rooms and wooden cabins you could rent. We stayed two nights in a tiny two-bed room with no AC. It felt like summer camp in the best way. Every meal was included, fish pulled straight from the river, all local and homemade. It was our only non-Airbnb stay of the trip and somehow the one that left the most lasting impression on me.

I couldn’t find much about rafting in this area online, so the whole thing felt like an exploratory run. That’s rare now, when everything can be researched down to the last detail before you ever arrive. Maybe that’s why it landed the way it did. One of the most underrated parts of our itinerary, and one I keep coming back to in my mind 🐟💭

The most beautiful sunset landscape I’d ever seen. And I didn’t have to hike anywhere or drive far. This was literally up the hill from our Airbnb in the mountain town of Žabljak 🥹🏔️

Driving into the mountains of Montenegro after spending a few weeks on the Adriatic coast. We drove in an hour before sunset and the lighting was just 👩🏻‍🍳💋 threw my drone up right outside of Durmitor National Park.

Somewhere in that mountain range is a nub that we would climb the next day - the highest point in the Durmitor Range of the Dinaric Alps 🏔️
